Heres my story and I'm sticking to it. Mostly because its the truth.

A bunch of my buddies were over a couple of weekends ago for beers and brats. (home brew, that is!) (braaaatwoooorrrst, drooollll!!) Anyway, I am out at the grill and come inside to find the guys looking at pr0n on my computer. No big deal, I think. Well now we have pr0n sites that automaticly show up in our favorites list and despite all efforts to delete them they come right back. Makes my wife of 10 years REAL happy. When will I be able to have my buds over again?!?!? So I did the free Spybot download and set controls for full kill but this does not seem to solve the problem. What can I do next?

It would be nice to have a pr0n free computer again for my wife and I to enjoy again! :(

Help!

1) back-up important data on CDs.
2) DL important hardware drivers for your hardware setup and backup on CD
2) format C:/
3) reboot computer and insert you choice of windows OS (or Linux/OpenBSD if you can handle it :D)
4) install all the hardware drivers
5) install all your old favorite software and GAMES!!!
6) copy your backed-up important data
7) create a new user with limited access for browsing sketchy sites next time

you can do above but thats a little overkill for some spyware ;)

go get lavasoft adaware, install, update, and run.

it will clean any of the pop up nonsense.

for the links in your favorites (which adaware will also scan and clean) you can manually remove them by going into the favorties folder and just deleting them. if youre on 95/98 it should just be in your windows folder, on win 2k or above itll be in your profile under documents and settings.

go that way before a format!

adaware got bought out by spy assassin. I got that and it works wonders! but you have to actually pay to get it to clean for you.. it only detects stuff for free...

This is exactly what I do and they all just keep coming back every time I log onto the internet. I have Spybot and did as everyone suggested and downloaded Adaware. Adaware found about 23 things but the pr0n in the favorites problem still persists. Should I uninstall and reinstall IE? I am running XP by the way. . .

If you haven't already, update your definitions for spybot/adaware. When not updated, they're worthless. When updated, they WILL solve your problem.

If you are running XP, you can go to start > run > msconfig, go to the right-most Tab, there you will find everything that runs on startup. It will (hopefully) be obvious to you what items to disable (mostly recently added items towards end of list) .

This has the advantage of, if you deactivate something you need, you can go back to reenable it.

I run adaware 6.0. yes its old but it works and got rid of the pop ups that is associated with porn. No... I don't watch porn all day. Those idiots on other forums like to surprise us once in a while. The adaware that I found on google are free trial ones that just detect the bugs but don't remove them. Hell one of them actually let more pop ups in after I cancelled the free trial one. Ask a bud where to get the good stuff.

using those you may get rid of 99% of spyware but theres probably still going to be some lingering around you wont be able to get rid of without formatting.

Go here, download HijackThis. It'll find any garbage on your PC. I wouldn't go as far as formatting, definately overkill for some spyware. Just be careful what you remove using that prog, some of the items your PC needs to run.

I always couple Hijack This! along with either Adaware or Spybot S&D and that gets 99.99% of everything...

Umm.. something screwy with the forum here - I saw yermom's post at the end of this thread, replied to it, and yet my post shows up above it? And how did yermom post 8 hours in advance of the actual time??

Edit: See, this post showed up above that one as well!

Ad-bot & Spy-aware

So the free versions of Adaware and Spybot that you can download are incomplete? Even though it looks like they find stuff and remove it? So I need to break out the $$ and purchase the full version inorder for them to work completely?

Nice!

Well, at least my computer seems faster, even if the pr0n is still there. I took a look at msconfig/startup but couldn't reall tell if some of it was bad or not. I am sure they don't make that stuff to obvious.
