When you hardwire your radar detector do you just cut the cord that plugs into the lighter in your car then tap into the wire for the overheads lights(i am installing it by the rearview mirror with compass and dimming) then ground it some where? What will i see if i slice open the lighter cord and where would i ground it to?

Absolutely not. The cord most like contains an adapter or at minimum a filter. The Valentine 1 comes with a hardwire kit.

What kind of detector is it?

It is an escort uh i am not sure about the series. i got it new from my friend for only 75 i think it retails for 250. I doubt that will help. But is has a plug in it that looks like a phone jack plug.

Right, that's what I was going to suggest. If you wire straight into the car's power, you'll get a lot of electrical noise from the alternator and ignition and such. It'll hurt the performance of your detector BIG TIME!

FWIW, you should probably check to make sure the appropriate wires match up (i.e. power, ground) for both the V1 and your Escort detector. It'd be a bummer to fry your detector by using the V1 hardwire kit.

Hardwired Escort 8500

I have hardwired my Escort 8500 into the power for the auto-dimming compass mirror. The detector sits above the mirror on the left and the cord only hangs down 2 inches.
Even if you do not have the compass mirror - the wire harness is there anyway.


Looks very discrete. Will post pics if anyone is interested.

You should use the Escort hardwire cable because it has nice connectors on it and it probably has instructions.

Looking at the connectors on the left end in that pic, I would say the one in the back is ground and the one in front is positive.

The positive lead looks like it would plug into the splice for the V1 which looks like this: http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/Track/6637/images/V1_connector_pic.jpg

I bet if you go to radio shack with that pic they can give you a splice like that.

Hmmm the splice pic is not showing up.

That looks like it will work with the connector on the escort hardwire cable.



I agree with WRXed that you shouldn't use the V1 Direct-wire power adapter for the Escort unless you make certain that it uses the same polarity.

I'm trying to tap into my 05 Legacy GT's power in order to power my Sirius unit. I already did the Auxin mod that Jazzy put together, so from an audio perspective my bypass mod. is great. Just looking to eliminate the cigarette adapter, thinking that if you did this for the radar detector then this may be a viable option for my Sirius unit.

I have a wire harness that came with the unit, It has a one hot wire and a ground wire, with an in-line fuse. I'm assuming I could just tap the wires on my auto dimming mirror?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Not Sure if FUNKED1 is still around. His last post may have been in 2004. Heh.

Do you know which wire is power to the Sirius unit? The other one would be ground. Are they red and black wires? Red generally means power and black ground.

If so, find an ohm meter and check the wires in your headliner for power and ground.
