Had to let her go

Traded in my leased 2016 wrx :( She was a blast but it was time to move on. As fun as she was it was just time. I know i eventually will miss a manual but for now i'm happy with an automatic. To be fair, if i was 27 instead of 37 she'd still be with me.

My parting review is as such for the old girl:

Looks....8, really loved how she looked as i was never a hatchback type guy. She was black on black

Interior....6, i thought she was nice enough and i appreciated the bluetooth and touch screen monitor and sunroof. Had the premium and the cloth seats were just ok. I wish the steering wheel had been more quality leather and after only 2 years it was already wearing and slightly peeling

Comfort....5, to be fair she wasn't built for comfort but she wasn't uncomfy either

Handling....9, easily best handling car i've owned

Performance....7, turbo lag is real but when she spooled she just went. The power drop off was bad on stock tune but i heard its better tuned

Gas mileage....10, routinely got 27+mpg, city included and i along with my wallet will really miss that. Honestly don't know what more u could ask for with a car this quick

Fun factor....8, she was very quick but not necessarily fast, handled like a cheetah and always made me smile when boost kicked in. I will miss that.

We had some good times subie sue and i hope the next owner treats you well :)

What did you trade for?

Never understood the "age" thing when it came to driving M/T vs A/T...

Ended up getting a 2014 taurus sho with performance package. Its a tank, completely diff car than wrx. I was just at a point where i wanted comfort and some luxury over just pure fun. It just feels more like grown up power for me and i still get to keep awd. This thing hauls ass, its like driving a big ass power speed boat after owning a jet ski lol

SHOs have shown some good power in the aftermarket.

I hope you're happy with your decision.

Age thing is about more than just a m/t
You should be quite happy with the sho. For being the size they are you wouldn't really know it.

So far i am in love with this car, it just offers so many creature comforts to go along with some serious power. Its fortunately unfortunate that fords depreciate so much because of lack of demand. I got it for a great price.
Congrats on the new ride! Being honest, I was a fan of the first generation of SHO, with its 3200lb weight, available manual, and high-revving V6, but they sortof lost the thread after that, if they were going to appeal to me. Sounds like it's what you were looking for, though, so good deal!

I think A/T's go along with mainstream, societal expectations of a "grownup" car. And, of course, it's what most people want, now. I did try...in '96 I bought a new Maxima with an auto, because I'd be traveling a lot for my (then) job. I hated it immediately, and it's been manuals ever since for my personal car. I don't mind being an oddball. :wiggles:

Not gonna lie, i will miss the m/t and wish i coulda kept subie as my weekend warrior to have fun in. All in all the sho just fits more what i need right now but i know the day will come where i get that "itch" again lol
See less See more
I can totally relate to this:>) I actually cross shopped the SHO a few years ago and was very impressed with it. Good looking car too IMHO. I've sort of found a median point, acquiring a Mazda 3 hatch with a 5 MT in it for when I get the itch. So far, its been fun to own. Have fun with the SHO!!
Not specific to the OP, but just in general

Never let anyone tell you that you are too old or "its time you got an adult car/house whatever" Age is a number, you like what you like so go buy it and drive it. No one else's opinion cares. For those that say "well my GF/Wife says......" You are doing it wrong.

Agree..one of my criteria for finding a girl that I was willing to marry was "Her advice makes sense to me, and she seems concerned about my happiness". I kicked a few psychos to the curb before finding my gal.. (22 years of marriage in April)
Re' the steering wheels--2 words--driving gloves. They will improve your feel for the wheel, look damn cool, and will prevent your hand sweat and oil from deteriorating the leather. My leather wheels always look brand new because I always drive with gloves. Bionic unlined driving gloves and lined for the winter. Best bang for the buck out there.

Anyway, I agree with your assessment of the Subie. I had to truck all over town yesterday in the snow and slush and REALLY appreciated the quickness and agility of the WRX.

BTW, I went from MT to AT but really missed the manual, so got back into a WRX MT a little over a year ago.

I would agree with you completely and i didn't mean for it to sound like I believe you should drive certain types of cars at certain ages. It just felt like the best move for me as i have grown out of the small tuner car scene i guess. I am still into tuning and have already put flowmasters on the SHO which sounds amazing btw. I just wanted a bigger car with more comfort and luxury but not completely giving up the ability to get off the line quickly and the sho provides that. I will say that just this weekend i missed taking ole subie sue for a quick energetic romp but ole big betty as i nicknamed her is my new love.

Yeah i already miss being able to shift gears a lil bit but i do wish the clutch of the subie was a lil softer and the transmission not quite as jerky/rev hangy. As much as i mastered 2nd gear smoothness it was always an effort to do so and my gf always let me know if i was off lol.

I hear you on the steering wheel and gloves but i live in fl, rarely is it ever cold enough for gloves. The alcantara and leather wheel of the SHO is just a whole other level of quality and comfort as it should be given that this is an almost 50k car new compared to the 30k subie.
I'm not sure that you ever outgrow a manual transmission. Having said that, my next car will like have a 10 speed auto. Too many gears to even think about shifting that thing with the paddles. "D' will be the most common transmission mode.

Agreed, i have never liked paddle shifters. Even in sport mode i prefer to not use the paddles in the sho
I think it would be fun to play with paddles in a situation like with Porsche's PDK transmission, where it's been designed to try to be an "enthusiast experience". The paddles in the Mini Cooper S, and others, that I've driven, were awful. Pull the paddle, count "One One Thousand, Two One Thousand..oh, there it goes..", infuriating. It wasn't even consistent.

I'm just weird, I LIKE having a clutch pedal, and rowing the shifter. And I'm 51 years old, so I think that this is just the way I am. :wiggles:
