Depends on your ultimate goals with the car and what you mean by serious mods.. or if you mind spending more money to do incremental mods, have to sell parts at a loss later on, etc.
Without big power goals I would look into picking up a used vf48 or something similar. Injectors/fuel pump/boost controller wouldn't be a bad idea to go along with it.. and a turbo back exhaust if you don't already have one.
For what it's worth, the FMIC won't be making the turbo work harder.. it will just increase the rpm it hits boost threshold slightly, and the transient response will be diminished. Running it on a FMIC wouldn't cause it to fail prematurely. I would make sure the turbo is the problem before spending money on anything. It would probably more likely for the engine to fail than the turbo.
