I don't plan on getting new rims for my rex, but i do want to run with the best possible shoes. What are the best tires for all around performance for a daily/ occaional winter condition driver as well as the best tire size for no rubs when loving the mountain roads...? Thanks for any help...

225/50/16.

Do a search for tire discussions. There is no "best" Especially when you start talking varied conditions like that.

I have read some messages to the effect that 225 is too much for the stock wheels but the guys actually running 225's seem to have nothing but good things to say about their choice of rubber.

I just ordered some Pirelli P-Zero Neros in the stock size because they seem to be the highest performance non-directional tire out there. I need non-directional because I burn up a lot of rubber on right-hand freeway ramps which means I need to rotate left-right instead of front-back.
