What should I get, 215/40/17 or 225/40/17, and why? I realize the 225 is just to ensure the rim will not crack as easy, but other than that what is the big diff.?

Total Diameters:

OEM= 205/55 r16: 24.88 inches

215/40 r17: 23.77 inches
deviation: -4.46%

225/40 r17: 24.09 inches
deviation: -3.16%

Conclusion: your actual speed and mileage will be higher than the speedometer and odometer.

I recommend:
215/45 r17: 24.62 inches
Deviation: -1.04%

225/45 r17: 24.97 inches
Deviation: +.036% (Closest to the OEM tire size)

Tire Rack

If you check out the tires on the Tire Rack website, they have all the overall diameters for all of their tires offered....Since I have 18's (with no tires yet), I'm opting for the Sumitomo HTR+'s, they have the closest overall diameter (25") to the OEMs...

Does anyone see a problem going with RE 950's 235/45/17 on 17" Prodrive P1's or 17" Supperlegga's? They only offer the tire in 235 or 215, and I think 215 would be too small. Why can't they just offer a 225. I would go with the S-03's but I have to deal with the winters in Washington D.C.

Similar question

I was just reading this thread and I had a similar question. I have an 02 WRX wagon and just bought 18x7.5 wheels with a +42 offset. What is the widest tire that will fit without rubbing or requiring fender modification? I have been looking at 225/40 R18 but would go wider if they'll fit. I'm also trying to keep the aspect ratio so as not to mess up the speedo.

Thanks,
Chris
