UPDATE: updated the broken photo links.

Guys so this weekend I fought my way through this install.

Besides still not having front speakers sound (pins are in a different harness) I managed to finally get my rear camera working!

The diagrams floating around here for the 2015 and 2016 there is one wire that still holds true to its current position on the 2017 and that is the reverse signal. (the wire that tells the HU that it is in reverse)

The power and video wires are not on the 28 pin harness! (well the power may be but I just ended up tapping into the main 12V / Ground.

So here is the wire harness that is for the camera:

The wires tested with my headunit tapped in:

6V - White
Ground - Black
Video(+) - Red
Video(-) - Grey

Hope this helps someone around here. And for those who might want to ask if I spliced into the OEM wires. I did not splice them. What I ended up doing was removing the white harness so that the female pin connectors were out in the open like how you see in my picture. Then I took a small paperclip and created "pins". I soldered my aftermarket wires (6v output from the module and my RCA cables) and inputted the paperclip afterwards into the female connectors and after I bent the pins so that it ran parallel to the female connectors. Then took heat shrink tubing and sealed it up tight!

Hope this helps anyone else trying to get OEM backup cams working for their new HUs!

Thanks for figuring out the pin assignments.

The pin-out on the 5-pin camera socket is the same as in the 2015-2017 Legacy/Outback models with the 7" screen.

For people want to keep the ability to go back to stock, a paper clip is not a good choice. Small ones are about 1 mm diameter. The terminals on the HU's 5-pin socket have a rectangular cross section, and are about 1/2 to 3/4 that size. So unless you file the ends of your paper clips smaller, you'll ream out the OEM female terminals.

A better thing to use would be terminals extracted from a Metra 70-7552, AX-SUB28SWC, or a similar harness.

Or the proper Sumitomo 5-pin connector (which I'm working on getting more of).

I used thin paper clips and did not force them in too much.

As per the 5 pin connector, I'm not too much into the aftermarket game and I tried my best to find the a look a like connector online, but I just dont have the knowledge on what 5 pin connector that could be in order for me to purchase a harness for. I would definitely would have used a harness for that. I did for the rest of my setup :)

If you have a link of the connector I would be more than happy to update my original post! I think the knowledge of pin assignments alone will help plenty of new 17' owners.
i knew something was different with this 17 i have....there is no 5 pin plug it is like the 2016 on the 28pin harness

Help reverse camera

Looking to hook up my android head unit and retain the backup camera. I have the 2017 wrx with the 28 pin harness and my aftermarket head unit has a RCA cable that gets the video feed from the backup camera the only issue is I'm not too sure what cables I need to connect in order to provide a video feed for the head unit. I found a pin out for the 28 pin connector i currently have my setup with the possitive wire from the RCA cable connected to the 12 pin and the negative wire connected to the 13 pin. I've got my head unit from subispeed (People will hate me for that) and all the harness from there as well. Thanks you for anyone helping!!!

Hey everyone! Replaced my wrx OEM hu today with an android hu. Everything's working great except for the backup camera, which needs an adaptor to hookup to the after market wiring harness. Can anyone help? Do I just need an adaptoror something?

If that is the harness from the Headunit itself, then yeah you will need to remove the cables from those pins and test with some alligator clips. Look at my pics from first post.

I believe it's this: https://chcwld.en.alibaba.com/produ.../Automotive_sumitomo_connector_6098_3802.html

Please feel free to correct me if I'm incorrect. I've been having the same issues getting the cam in my 2016 Crosstrek reconnected after switching to an aftermarket HU. It looks like the same connector and harness you guys are dealing with.
Subaru cameras are four wires....

power is 6v+ ground is ground video + and video -

if your camera isnt coming on, then it isnt wired right or your 6v power is incorrect

the picture of the connector your holding is nothing more than a ground wire with a female spade terminal on it.
Jericho11,

Do you have any manual or pinout for this head unit? I just received what looks like the identical one, but it came with no documentation, not even a basic wiring diagram.

Thanks,
Dan
