2016 wrx or older STI?

What would be a better plat form to build on? I currently have a 2016 Wrx and have it a litter higher than stage 2. I really want 350-400 whp reliably. So would say a 2005 STI with 65,000 miles on it be a better platform to build on to reach that goal? Or the the FA20 be Better?

The closer you get to 400whp the less reliability you'll have regardless of the build, or vehicle choice.

The ej257 engines are tried and true and there is a solid aftermarket support and knowledge base to work with. I've not known anyone personally but have seen tale of bent rods in the fa20f when making big power. You've got to keep in mind 400whp will be double factory hp numbers.

IMO when it comes to around the 400whp mark, the wrx's flaw is not the motor. Whether be the ej255 or the new fa20. The wrx's downfall is the transmission. Regardless of the year, the STi's tranmissions can hold up to 650hp and 650trq, and their clutch can hold up to 450hp and 450trq. (if my memory serves me correct) This is the exact reason why I upgraded from my 2011 wrx to a 2012 STi. The transmission is much more built for the higher horsepower builds. Not to mention the DCCD, brembos, and slightly better engine internals.
So can you swap a STI tranny to a wrx?
Sure, if you want to spend way more than it would have cost you to just buy the sti

This. It will cost a good bit of money to do the swap.
Breck...how do you like the stage 2 on your wrx? Was it a considerable improvement from stock acceleration?
Not sure if i missed something but did someone blow their 2015+ WRX transmission? As far as I know no one has hit the limit yet with the exception of the clutch beginning to slip at 350+
You always ask the questions that are so easily found in the search bar, lol. But in all honesty, even with an STi, 400Whp "reliably" is going to take deep pockets.

If you're looking for plenty of reliable power, cheap, you chose the wrong cars to get into. May be time to jump to a v8.
