2013 WRX Help

New Member but had this car for a while now...

I am the second owner of a 2013 WRX Premium, bought it from a close friend in 2014 with approx. 17k on it at the time. Car was/is bone stock but had a factory full stainless exhaust added on the build sheet.
At about 28K miles on it (2/2015) my engine had a catastrophic failure. Rod bearing went out. They (Subaru) warrantied it no questions asked with a new short block rotating assembly, oil pump, pick-up and the like for a turbo car job.

Get the car back, break it in how they tell me, runs fine for quite some time. Go to Atlanta for about a month for work and threw a code while giving it some juice onto the freeway. Turbo starts pulling hard then the whole car shuts-off turns back on. Call a dealership down there to take it in but am told they have no loaners at the time and I would have to wait. So, I just turn the car on-off a few times and the code clears itself. Whatever, its fine to me at this point cause I don't want to keep messing with it while out of town and not being able to have a car.

Make it back home and one night while getting on the freeway yet again, have the code show and the car do its shut down-start up at speed like before. I'm thinking damn, I need to get this thing looked at for once. Took my friend to work the next morning and thats when I hear it...rod bearing is going. Limp the car home cause I was at the time in the middle of downtown. Get to the house and I know its trashed, she was trying to shut down on me with RPMS below 3k. Get it towed to the dealership and they confirm, at 34k (7/22/2015) miles she let loose a con rod bearing again and metal was littered in the bottom end.

Still warrantied they call and replace said bottom end with just a short block rotating assembly this time. No oil pump, screener or pick-up. I honestly don't know what their oiling system consist of but whatever. Get the car back, break that motor in as described and life is good.

Car drives many 2 hour one way trips from this point on and a few 8-10 hour one wayers here and there. Not hammering on it but not diving it like an old lady too. It is in fact a WRX right?

So, at 61,200 miles (3/20/17) this motor finally has said I had enough too. Rod bearing yet again. Call Subaru, tell them whats up, I'm 1,200 miles out of warranty what should I do...tow it to the dealership on their advise because she says I have a good leg to stand on noting the car's history.

Well I'm in a different state than where it was bought and had two different dealerships work on it on the past two instances just because I relocated to different areas, and the DPSM out here doesn't want to mess with it even though its on his turf. Call Subaru HQ they first tell me its out of warranty and blah blah blah. I brought up the fact that this car has a history, didn't have any of the oiling system replaced last time and that this is just bull over 1k miles. I had to send them all the copies of the warranty work orders and receipts of the oil and filters I bought for the changes. I am lucky enough that I was employed as a commercial mechanic for a little while and still have access to a fully stocked commercial fleet shop with lifts and the whole 9 yards. They were less than thrilled that I did the servicing and want hardcore proof other than bank statements that show purchases. 2 of the 5 actual receipts I was able to dig up but they still don't care. Finally get ahold of someone a little up the food chain at HQ and they tell me if I authorize the tear-down on my dime we can go from there. If a bearing is spun or already eaten away how are they going to tell me its my fault or theirs with a straight face? I just want them to fix the damn thing.

Has anybody experienced this or have advice on what to do? It is still sitting at the dealership out here as of now. I have to go back where I'm originally from at the end of the month and might trailer it back to the original dealership and tell them its gonna sit here till someone finds a solution to my problem.

Just FYI first two motors ran Mobile1 in them with changes every 5-7k with WIX oil filters.
Third motor ran Royal Purple 5-7k on the changes again with WIX.

This thing was my daily that was able to scoot around when I needed to.

Thanks for help or info in advance.

Well mobile one and Royal purple with oil change intervals twice the factory required mileage is your problem.

subarus aren't fans of Mobil1, and the OCI on any turbod Subaru is 3750 miles...

I hope they take care of you
When did that happen if the book states 7,500 as of the build of this car (2013) They have since changed it on newer models is that correct?
SOA already confirmed that in email to me that it should have been every 7500 miles. Stating I had to have proof of it being done every 7,500.
3,750 running full synthetic huh? Good thing they notify owners. Dealer never even said that number when talking locally. Pretty sure they (dealership) recommend 5k miles and it was $60.
Guys also say 0w40 or 5w40 Rotella but thats not spec weight either. So its a whole bunch of garbage either way.

Also heard:

"If they re-used the oil cooler, you were boned from the word go.

It is impossible to get all the trash out of the veins of that thing without spending a lot of time.

Also, if they didn't pull the 3 screen filters out of the turbo oil feed line and the AVCS feed lines, the trash could hide there too."

After talking elsewhere it sounds like the dealership did a sub-par job of decontamination and replacement of parts leaving the car acceptable to more problems.

My 2011 says it right in the book under heavy use or whatever.

No, poor oil and long changes are the culprit. Spun bearings are nothing new to Subaru. They are caused by low oil, poor oil, long changes. It's pretty clear cut.

Understood, thank you for the reply. Didn't know these thing were that finicky until all this.
Yeah, they can be very finicky. Tunes have to be solid and are required for all mods, lean factory tunes, known oil pickup failures, and others. Just search around here. Plenty of information about keeping your ej healthy

It's definitely the oil that you use that's the issue here. Mobil1 Sheers like hell in high heat (ie. turbo) applications after 3k miles. This has been widely documented as being the case. Apparently, Royal purple isn't a whole lot better. Subaru should absolutely replace the motor again, I'm kinda surprised that they didn't employ an extended warranty specifically for the motor after the rebuilds. Most of the time they do. Either way, when you get this car back rebuilt, and plan to still go up to 7500 miles between changes, Use Rotella T6, AmsOil, Motul, or Subaru's brand oil. Filters should either be Subaru, Purolator PureOne or WIX.

Avoid Mobile1 in turbo applications like the plague. I would now advise the same for royal purple.

If you're concerned about 5w40 rotella, then stick with AmsOil or Motul. I personally use Rotella T6 and change every 3k miles. The ONLY oil I would feel comfortable with going 7500 miles on is AmsOil, and I would check it every 2k miles for consumption to assure there is still adequate amounts.

Rotella has been a great consistent and reliable oil for Subarus. There are tons of posted used oil analysis results posted around the web to back that claim.

Personally I'm a rotella guy, quality oil, fair price. A ton of folks swear by motul and it also has proven it's worth.

Do you guys follow the severe driving conditions for all turbo Subarus? When I bought my 2016 with the FA motor, the salesman did not mention it. I also emailed Subaru of America about the OCI, and they said this...Subaru of America would recommend an oil change every 6 months/6,000 miles, with more frequent oil changes recommended if you drive under ‘severe driving conditions’. I mentioned in the email that I drive a 2016 WRX, and this is what they told me. But if the general consensus around here is to follow the severe driving conditions schedule, I will do so.
I do with anything because the book is generic and a turbocharged engine is under far higher stress.

In my case both the salesman who owns a WRX and the Service Manager recommended doing the oil change more frequently than every 6,000 miles . . . of course the cynic in me could have been thinking it was a way to drum up more business, but most folks here recommended the same. Sure, it costs a bit more right now, but having the peace of mind that comes with knowing I am doing everything I can to keep this car going for the long haul is worth every penny to me.
Sounds good to me, I will be doing it more often. What about the turbo motors is harder on oil?
