Is it every start or only cold? There isn't much there to grind unless you are maybe hearing a idler pulley rattle.

2012 wrx noise
Getting a grinding noise for a second when I start her up. Coming from the alternator area. Any ideas on what it could be would be great. She’s a 2012 wrx And the colder it is the louder it is

Yes every start just more noticeable when cold especially when it’s 10 degrees in the a.m

If you are comfortable working on the car you can pull the belt and check the tensioners or the alternator bearing.
I can't imagine anything in that area to grind. How many miles?

I get the same noise but I've only had it for 10 years or so and I've not worried too much yet. LMK what you find.

Edit it doesn’t sound like that and I tested the alternator so now I’m thinking starter or like you said the tensioner

Could be turbo shield, I know i've had some random noises attributed to that which could resemble grinding. I mean sometimes noises in the engine bay sound in different places. Also could just be general Subaru noises after starting.
I also get the short grind on startup with my 06. Only on cold mornings. Not too worried since its only when it's cold and not constant
it was my starter about to go. I put a new one one in 3 months ago and all is goodI get the same noise but I've only had it for 10 years or so and I've not worried too much yet. LMK what you find.
