2011 WRX Hatch - keep or sell??

Hey guys! This is my first post here, excited to join the community. I have owned a 2011 WRX Hatch for about 6 months now and I love it. I understand now why there is such a strong community around the WRX / STI.

About two months ago I started getting a clicking noise in 3rd, and being the slacker that I am, I ignored it. Fast forward to about a month ago, and I'm eastbound on I70 in the middle of Colorado, I shift into 3rd, and the gear basically explodes inside the transmission. I make it back to Denver, drop it off at a transmission shop and hope for the best. I just got it back today, total cost of repairs was just under $4k. Had to replace the clutch as it was about done for (it slipped all the time), plus new 2nd and 3rd gears and all the necessary syncros and additional parts related to gear replacements. Not happy about it, but it is what it is.

Now I don't like to brag, but i've been driving manuals for a very long time, I'm not hard on the transmission or the clutch. The shop that did the work for me said the damage was due to years of hard driving, not months. The car has 60,000 miles. My question to you fine folks is, if you were in my shoes, what would you do with the car? It's obvious the previous owner was pretty aggressive with the car (I don't blame him) given that i am replacing half the transmission internals at 60,000 miles. Are there other potential gremlins I need to be aware of now that I know my WRX was driven pretty hard for most it's life? Am I better off selling the car and going with a new WRX? I absolutely love the car, smiled the entire drive home, but I can't help but wonder if there are any looming issues with it. I know y'all don't have much to go on, should I take it somewhere and have them specifically check certain things to ensure it's running solid? Thanks for any advice!!

Is your car modified or stock?

Take the car to a performance shop like The Boost Creep in Longmont who are familiar with modified Subarus, and have them give the car a used car inspection. They'll be able to spot things that may have been a "return-to-stock" job which would point to a modified car that was stripped of aftermarket parts just prior to sale, which is somewhat common. Have them perform a compression / leakdown test, which will give you insight as to the health of the engine.

Have you performed the 60K service on your car yet? If not, this is the perfect time, as you need to pull the spark plugs (which are part of the service) to do the compression test, so replace them with new properly gapped ones while they're doing it. If the car passes the compression / leakdown tests, enjoy the car. If not, then weigh your options at that time, but know that another hefty repair bill may be in your future. A shortblock replacement with a new OE block from Subaru will run ~$4K when you add up everything that will be needed (block, labor, auxiliary parts). TBC will be able to go over everything at that time and give you better figures as to what things would cost, since they deal with these regularly.

I always recommend a compression / leakdown test, as well as a used car inspection (preferably at a shop that deals with modified Subarus, if available) prior to purchase. If you decide to sell the vehicle, please be honest with the future owner, and disclose the results of the tests you paid for. While it will impact your overall sale price, being a decent person is far more important.

It is lowered, and the front / rear fender have been replaced with STI fenders but engine / performance wise it is stock. I don't actually know if it was modified prior to the dealership selling it to me, that is a great question (I bought it from a Subaru dealership, not certified).

That is great advice though, I'll give TBC a call tomorrow.

Totally understand regarding disclosing any known issues to the buyer if I decide to sell. Had that been done for me, I might be in a different situation now. I have no desire to pass on problems to someone else.

You sound like a stand-up person. I hope the best for you
It depends entirely. I would be inclined to keep the car to get my money out of it. Selling it now you are just eating too much on the back end. You may get lucky and find someone to buy it for what you have on the loan but I doubt it.

If you do decide to get out from under this car, you're lucky that you're nearby to Heuberger Motors in Colorado Springs. They are a vendor on here, and Kenzie will be sure to make sure you get the best price on your next ride.

I'm lucky to have another dealership vendor over here close to me in the Tri-State area, Clayton @ Ramsey.

Both of them take very good care of the members here @ ClubWRX, and I'd be shocked if you could find better pricing anywhere.

I'm inclined to agree, but another $4K repair bill, and you're $8K into the vehicle on top of the purchase price, and it's not like there's any real "upside" to that money spent (it's not like it accelerates faster, handles better, stops better, looks better), other than it's hopefully in "like new" condition (so you hope they got the car at a steal of a purchase price). If they don't intend to keep the car until it rusts out, it might be worthwhile to cut losses and just bail, because it's going to take a while for the $8K to recoup. That's for everyone to decide. I was lucky my big repair bill came 10 years into owning my Subaru, and I had no intention of selling it, so it was an easy choice.
