Hi everyone. I have a 2002 wrx automatic wagon. My automatic transmission went out recently at around 180k and my car is currently at the shop. I was told by the shop that only a 02 or 03 transmission would work since the 04 and 05 are different BUT after talking to a guy online he mentioned that the only difference is the front axel connectors and that those later 04 and 05 transmissions will work. Can anyone confirm that? And will I just need to buy new 04 and 05 front axels?
thanks In advance

Your best bet is to find a long-term subaru specialist shop, TiC, Andrewtech, etc. and give them a call. Anyone on forums will just be guessing unless they have done this exact thing. Since you have an auto, there's the added complication of whether the transmission sensors, TCU & BCM will play nice or sulk & refuse to talk to each other.
