    Skeptical about Cobb AP

Ok I've read the FAQ about this and I have talked with previous owners. Sorry for being a noob with engine management tuning. Ok the FAQ is dated 2005. It states that subaru dealers did not have the tools to read an ECU tune, what about now in 2014?? I've heard/read that they can be detected by subaru I've also heard that they are unreliable. My friend has an 09 hatch and his engine is toast because of the AP. Can anyone give any advice/insight about the Cobb AP and if they are reliable. Please no redirects to Cobb tuning, of course they are going to say its safe and legit, Cobb is trying to sell a product, I'm looking for real world experiences whether good or bad, thank you

How do you know the AP was the cause?

Subaru has always had the resources to detect an accessport. There is a checksum value but they don't have the ability to directly detect the accessport. ( Can dealer tell if accessport was on car?? - NASIOC )

    I loved my Cobb AP.

Why is your friend's engine toast from the AP? What happened to it?

The AP as a piece of hardware is very reliable.

I doubt the AP is the reason. I suspect however you're talking about the tune. And if Cobb's tune is indeed the reason it blew, then he should've known to datalog it at least several times after flashing the map on there....it's practically common sense, not to mention a necessary step in the process as outlined by Cobb. Also, the Cobb tunes only work with the mods they specify in the map notes.

That being said, some cars don't take well to the Cobb maps, but they are very few and far between....and if your car dosnt like it, then you would know when you log it after flashing the map.

What were his mods? Was it an OTS map or custom tune? What do his logs look like?

I'm willing to bet your friend is making claims with no logical basis.

I love my AP. bought it last month when I bought my car. the STG 1 is a huge difference by itself, but I stuck with Cobbs OTS map for about 20 minutes, then I flashed to TP's tune.
No regrets here. My 2011 is out of warranty anyways...

    Skeptical about Cobb AP

Yeah the AP is great. I've had it on since "stage 2" tune which I followed the notes exactly and now it's currently holding my custom Protune and I use it to set my launch control at 5k which I only use in my driveway when I want to hear awesomeness. Because 5 speed with 300wtq....

I been stage 2 for nearly 50k miles without any problems so far. Tuned using the AccessPort and running the TP stage 2 map. But I am not hard on the car by any means. I have not data logged in the past (although I probably should have) but all seems well. Great gains and reliable I would say...

I don't but he swears it was from the AP, idk he was pretty hard on the car, so, but I've heard of other instances with other people and they all blamed Cobb. One guy has a youtube channel Evan shanks, his car was protunes by Cobb and they ****ed it up, so

I would consider that his fault, not the people who manufactured the device he used to change the tune on his car.
