If you are at or below 2500 RPM and need to accelerate you should be downshifting, accelerating, then going back to the high gear once at cruising speed.

Ever notice that is what an auto trans is doing? That is cause it is correct.

(holy ****....did I just pay 'auto transmission' a complement? someone slap me)

Hmm, I wouldn't recommend going WOT in fifth, honestly. Not necessarily to prevent damage, it's just not really the "happy zone" for the engine. You'd be better off dropping down to fourth and going WOT there. As far as vibration, maybe you have a loose bushing. At Stage 1, if I went WOT in fifth, I didn't feel any particular vibration, the car just felt sluggish.

Did you notice any of this before you installed the stage 1 map? If not, you might be picking up some knock at cruise. Going WOT in fifth, you'd be in a high load, low rpm region of your base timing map, so it's very possible you're picking up some knock in this corner. Getting log files would clarify that.

Issac, that is not really correct. Once you pass about 130mph you have topped out 4th, and have to go to 5th if you want to continue....and lets face it, you are not gonna top out 4th and hit 5th at 50% throttle, that would slow you down.

Ok, maybe if you're racing the standing mile (when else would you LEGALLY hit 130mph in a WRX?), but I'm talking about reality: on the street. Fifth gear is fine for cruise, but if you want to pass on the freeway, most would agree dropping down to fourth (putting you around 3.5k rpms and primed for boost) is a good best practice. It's also a lot more satisfying than lugging the engine and watching for the rpms to catch up.

If you're looking for the ultimate speed limit of the car, then yeah, but it doesn't sound like that's what the OP is after.

That's the beauty of manual: YOU yourself determine what gear you're in. If someone can't manage that, oh well, they end up going WOT in 5th at 50 or 60. Anyone can downshift, but who really needs to? I mean my old V8 had plenty of torque at 15oo RPMs... Just forgetting that it also had 5.7liters spread over 8 cylinders and tops out at 5.5k RPM...
