question for NY states residents: muffler delete and passing inspections

Hi all. As the title states, this is a question for those that live in NY:

I am considering a nameless muffler delete. Will I pass my yearly safety and emissions inspections without the mufflers? For those with (or HAD) a muffler delete, chime in on what you think of it also.

I am only going by Youtube videos and I love the deep sound. Forum comments for the most part say that it is not ridiculous loud, which is good news because I am too old for that scene and I just want a deep rumble. Also, nameless seems to have a pretty good reputation with people here.

If it is a no-go with the muffler delete, then I will go with the nameless catback with 4" mufflers. Anybody have any comments with the differences between the muffler delete and 4"? I have been watching so many youtube videos that they all started sounding the same to me.

Thanks in advance everyone for your responses and help!

You know what, I think I am going to answer my own question and say that I am going to forget the idea of the muffler delete and just get the 4" muffler. Save myself the aggravation and the uncertainty!

Muffler has nothing to do with safety/emissions inspection.

That said...NYS VTL is so ambiguous with it's wording on exhaust that ANY modification that increases volume is grounds for a traffic stop / citation. My ticketless streak was ended because of a Borla XR-1 catback, and my honesty with the Sheriff who stopped me.

I've heard a nameless muffler delete and it sounds fantastic, but it would be too loud for dd IMHO. I have the 5" abe and it's subtle, but still nice and deep.

EJ257: thanks for that bit of info. Driving a red car, the fastest color btw confused1, doesn't help my cause either, but I won't be doing anything stupid on the road and so hopefully my exhaust won't be a big deal.

soloz2: thanks for the input regarding the exhaust. Yeah, it is my DD... so that pretty much settles it for me. I want it to be just a step above subtle, and so that is why I am thinking about going for the 4".

I picked the Sheriff up on my V1 before I even made the right-hand turn onto the road I was stopped on; I knew he was there. My stop was solely because my car was "loud". I had been stopped more than two dozen times with that exhaust on the car, and it the volume of my exhaust was never brought up.

Be aware of the wording of NYS VTL and make your choice to modify your exhaust accordingly. That's all I'm saying...

Actually, I'm not sure where in NY you are located, but if you are in the Buffalo or Rochester area I'm sure we could get a mini meet together where you could hear all 3 options in person. The last meet we had there was all 3 options... I don't recall who had the muffler deletes off hand, but I can call/text a friend who has 4" mufflers. He got his after listening to/riding in my car with 5" mufflers.

soloz2: thanks for the offer, much appreciated. I live in NYC so that makes you about a 7 hour drive away (I used to go to school in Rochester and Syracuse tho). I am pretty going to abandon my idea about the muffler delete, and I'm waiting on some feedback on the just released Cobb exhaust. Otherwise, I think I will go with the 4" nameless! If I do find myself up in your neighborhood, I will let you know! And thanks again!

Reviving the dead thread now... I did the muffler delete almost a year ago and haven't had any unwanted attention. It is loud when you get on it but once you hit whatever speed you're aiming for it quiets down. As for inspection I'm in NNJ so I can't say, but I figure it will probably depend on if they had their coffee or not that day.

welcome to NY. come back anytime.

the laws in this state are tight as anything. cant count how many times ive been himmed up for tint. oh wait i can, once, because im not spending the 150 to keep getting it tinted just to have to peel it off.

Mufflers do not have anything to do with emissions just with noise.

I know several places its illegal to change your exhaust to anything that is louder than the factory exhaust, however they do not give a db level so its pretty much a crap shoot if you get a ticket.

There is some wording I've seen elsewhere(I can't remember the state, saw it on a BMW forum) that its flat illegal to modify the exhaust in any way outside of factory condition. Although its probably targeted at emissions components it was pretty vague.

As far as what exhaust to choose, yeah deletes sound awesome, but they also sound immature to me personally. I'd hit up YouTube and listen to a few until you find one that sounds OK to you

Don't let it bother you, better not to burn up the planet while we wait for performance clean vehicles.

What's irritating is most car laws in non carb states are vague as hell when it comes to what you can and can't do.
