    PA Law: Cats?

I couldn't find an answer to this question so here it is:

Which/how many cats do I need to have so I can -legally- pass a PA inspection?

Is the number of cats actually important or do they just rely on the emissions results?

Can someone please shed some light on this? Thanks.

Need to have one cat per pipe...if you have dual pipes but they come to a common header (like a 4 cylinder with dual exhaust) you need only one prior to the pipe spliting to 2. Your passing is contingent on 2 tests: Visual and Emissions. Meaning that they need to be present, and they need to be "filtering" your nox and sox. Note that the visual fine in PA (meaning a cop pulls you over for excessive noise and looks under the vehicle) used to be in the nieghborhood of $1000 a pipe (Back in 1998)...It also depends on the freqency that your county requires emissions testing (example: In Baltimore MD its every 2 years, while Salisbury MD, which is 3 hours away, is never, only when you first purchase a vehicle).

Depends from county to county, but its usually a visual check and an error code check. So I think your ok with 1 cat as long as its not throwing any codes.

All cats that were on the car from the factory have to be present to pass the visual inspection. That means that you can pass visual with dummy cats or high flow cats. That will get you through visual, since we(techs) don't look inside the pipes. Then the second part of the test is an OBDII ecu scan to check for DTC's. If none are present(even with no cats, thanks to some sort of EM) then you should pass. If you are having trouble getting through inspections, check my profile and shoot me a PM. I will be able to help you out.

P.S. I'm an OBDII certified inspection mechanic, so listen to me, and me alone.

Technically, you may not remove any cats that came on the car from the factory per Federal Law. Period.
