i just got my wrx,,,,i have around 5k on it and one day we had a little snow and i was fooling around doin donuts and then after that night...my tranny was messed up....NOw everytime i shift from 1st to 2nd my gears grind...i thought it was a sincro...but the dealer is rebuilding my tranny...I think that it shouldn't do that no matter how hard u beat on the car....
I stripped out the first gear synchro at about 6000 miles. I took the car in for the 7500 mile service. It was replaced no questions asked by John Elway Subaru....even with a TBE.
I have about 22g's on the car and it is somewhat modified. I have run it at least 50 times at the track with super hard launches and only now am I experiencing problems with the trani which were to be expected from the abuse
About two/three weeks ago I got a hold of some Redline Gear Oil and changed the gear oil since I was having a little trouble shifting into 2nd gear at hi-RPMs. This helped the sychros out a little by providing more lube than the stock trani oil does. Its not a problem solver but it did help a little.. and when its that bad, a little bit goes a long way..
Honestly if you guys are daily driving the WRX and are having difficulty with the MT, get some of this oil... it will also help prolong the life of the synchros. Also after driving my friends WRX I've found that the short throw shifter is causing a lot of my shifting problems! Go figure!
What I really need is a new clutch... damn that money pit!
Well, I have 6k on mine, only mods worth mentioning are STi mounts an BOV. getting a grind into 4th whe I shift over 4 grand. taking it in Tues I will update then.
3900 miles and 23 days after the purchase of a BRAND NEW '04 SUBARU WRX 1st and 4th gear synchro are totally shot! About 95% of these miles were highway miles from two very long trips I took during the break in period. Don't let anyone say that "hard, aggressive driving" is the only thing that will destroy these tranny's. Mine is shot from simple day to day driving. Still waiting to hear back from the dealership. I called them this morning (twice) and still haven't heard anything back.
Anything less than a completely new transmission at 3900 miles is unacceptable to me! I'll post results from the dealership as they occur.
Hmmm... for a simple little synchro replacement, they sure seemed to replace an awful lot of components. I'm not complaining (beyond driving a 'grocery gettin' Forrester for three weeks) but it does seem that Subaru knows more about my problems than what they are telling me.
Here is my story. At 23000 miles complained about tranny popping out of reverse. Dealer couldn't duplicate it. IT has been gettting worse and now at 55000 miles dealer got it to happen easily. I got a call tonight about a TSB for this issue which includes some bearings and stuff. I'll find out more tomorrow. Get this though because its after the 3/36 they don't want to pay for a rental car. Had it been before the 3/36 they would have covered it. Tomorrow should be fun considing during my search I found the TSB for the clutch issue TSB# 03-51-02. Now I'm going to have them pay for a rental car while they replace my clutch asm and transmission parts. They will pay for my rental car because I reported the problem well before the 3/36 was out. Anybody know of the transmission TSB the dealer was talking about?
Anyone else had tranny problems on their 2004 WRX like Bayley? Just got mine and was wondering if perhaps Subaru has addressed this issue by now since most of the complaints on here seem to be about the 2002 models
HC,
They (the mechanics / techs) were pretty quiet about what the replaced, and why. Like I said before, I've got a feeling SOA isn't telling us everything (surpise there!) Got a +1,000 mile road trip this weekend, we'll see how everything holds up.
Yo Bayley, my parents live near the edge of West Bloomfield & Farmington Hills (actually will be there next week before heading off to Pittsburgh); I'm picking my '04 from Dwyer & Sons Subaru after this weekend (had to order).
Which dealership did you take your complaints to and where are you getting it taken care of?
Yes! My 04 with 5K miles is going in tomorrow. No 2nd, terrible 5th gear grind at high rpm... The '04 Tranny has some issues I think...

Anyone know what (if anything) is actually different about the '04 tranny? Is it the same as the '03 (which is supposed to include the replacement parts used to fix the clutch shudder on the '02, correct?). Just picked up my '04 the other day and I just want to be on edge for premature signs of any possibly known problems.
Hmmm... not sure... We've never popped open an 04 tranny before, although I remember not being too happy with the tranny when I first picked up the car about 6 weeks ago... Compared to the 02-03 tranny both the engagement and the shifting doesn't seem as smooth or as crisp... but maybe that's just me???
HC,
I picked up my '04 from Dwyer & Son's. I've had good experiences with them to date, Kathy was the sales woman that hooked me up with a sweet deal on my old Van Trade in (owed $10,700... couldn't sell it on my own for $9,500... Kathy got me $10,500 trade in value! )
The service department at Dwyer & Son's was good. Again, they really didn't get into the specifics of what they replaced, or why... but I'm sure they would just recite out of the book whatever they did. Granted, the Forrester was not the WRX I had originally purchased, they did give me a beater... uh, loaner car for the entire duration of the repair.
A close friend of mine has been working as a repair technician / mechanic for the Subaru dealership up in Marquette, MI for the past few years. I told him my story and he too was surprised to hear about the synchro's going out so soon. He commented that more often it's the gears that wear out / strip, not synchro's. He hasn't heard any new information regarding the '04 tranny's other than it's the same piece of schit as the '02 - '03 WRX's.
...should'a waited for the STi. No offense guys, but my WRX is coming up short in many area's:
a) Drive train reliability
b) Performance
c) Driveability (ECU strategy)
my friends wrx pretty much grenaded his tranny. they said he bent third gear his 4th gear grinded when shifting into and now they said its due to abuse... he is still arguing with him. i told him that if they are making him pay for a new tranny, he should just sell the damn car after replacing the tranny with a stocker.
How many times is to many times when the tranny starts to grind?
and if the problem isn't consistant how would subaru know how to fix the tran........i just don't want the problem to get so bad and not be able to drive the car
thanks
I had to have my '03 tranny rebuilt after approximately 3500 miles, 1st and 2nd gear synchros were bad. There was a horrible whining noise when I would let off the gas but still be in gear. I had to go to 2 dealerships, and fight with the district service rep before I was able to get it fixed. Both dealerships quoted it as "normal". I felt like I was going retarded! Then when I took the district guy for a ride, I didn't even make it out of the parking lot before he said "we will fix it". Now 1st to 2nd, and 2nd to 3rd grind as lot. Having a rebuilt tranny sucks!
I'm gonna limp into the dealer tomorrow, My 2nd gear is like neutral and it won't even go into 1st gear. Am i gonna need to replace the gear set or the whole tranny, i'm new to breaking things.
can anyone tell me what signs/sounds to look out for as an indicator for trouble starting to arise with my '04 tranny? just what is this "grind" that everyone refers to betw. gears like?
Help, i don't know what to do, the dealer is telling me that they are not going to fix my tranny under warranty, although last week they said it wasn't even a question that they would fix it under warranty. They now tell me i broke it while i was stuck in mud, I've never been stuck in the mud before!!!! The mud under the car is from a camping trip i went on!
What should i do? I'm thinking about calling the BBB and filing a complaint, do you think that will get me anywhere?
I do know one thing, after i get this fixxed, i will not own a Subaru.
I have 18k miles and the tranny stripped 2nd gear, i'm well within my warranty period and the car is completely stock, i really can't settle for anything less than them fixing it under warranty.
The dealer pretty much calls me a lier, this is not how i would exspect a business to handle this problem. I do not appreciate them calling me a lier.
Thanks for any ideas.
steve
