Grinding between third and fourth gear

I have a 2006 WRX and I've started to really notice a problem shifting between third and fourth gear. If I shift over 3k RPMs into fourth it will grind slightly, but once it is actually in gear it is fine. If I shift below that it usually won't grind and slides right into gear. One thing about my car is the clutch pedal is extremely stiff and engages really close to the floor. Is this typical for this year of WRX or could it be the clutch isn't fully disengaging and causing the gears to grind slightly from third to fourth?

Your pressure plate could have overheated at some point.
It sounds like the clutch is slipping.
How many miles on the clutch and have you ever replaced it? Or the flywheel?

I'm actually not sure how many miles are on the clutch and flywheel. The clutch has always been really stiff and I think it has had the issue between third and fourth since when I bought it, but never paid attention to it. I bought the car about a year ago and have put around 30-40k miles on it, almost all highway. I have noticed that if I bog the engine slightly going into a new gear you can almost feel it surge a little as it gets up to speed, but I was thinking that was going to be plugs that have never been replaced more than likely. Is there anyway to check it myself or even just test it without taking it into a shop?

i have the same issue , i notice that if i let the RPM drop below 3K it doesn't happen & also when the car is cold (in the morning) , it doesn't do it at any RPM , not until the trans oil warms up....i have changed the oil a couple times but wondering if maybe a thicker weight of oil may help ?? anyone ? just a thought

In Alberta a thicker oil may not be a realistic option.
