    Na, tranny is a goner..., sorry, wouldn't want to raise false hope. The noise you're getting when finally in 3rd, that's bad. Like it was said before, drain the transmission, see what comes out. You find pieces - you KNOW what's up. And you're s'posed to change tranny oil from time to time anyways, so that couldn't be wrong to do.
    You can't have everything - where would you put it?

    Na, tranny is a goner, sorry - but I would not want to raise false hope. The noise you're getting when finally in 3rd is a really bad indication. Go ahead and drain the tranny, like it was already suggested. If and when you find pieces you KNOW what's up. And tranny fluid is s'posed to be changed sometimes anyways, so no loss doing this.
    If it was the clutch you'd get the same noises at same engine speed, independent on what gear, only dependent on rpm's.
    You can't have everything - where would you put it?
