    manual transmisson shift problem

My 02 WRX wont shift from gears 1,3,5 into 2,4,R and visa versa. It will easily shift from 1 to 3 to 5, and if I use heavy force and put it into 2,4,R it will easily shift from 2 to 4 to R, but then won't shift back into the 1,3,5 group (without heavy force). Any ideas?

When was the last time the fluid was changed? Were there any metal shavings that you noticed?

Changed the oil 3 months ago and no metal shavings found, everything looked clean. I replaced the oil with Redline lightweight shockproof.

Shift lever linkage would be first on my short list, after that it's the transmission...
You can't have everything - where would you put it?
