Manual to auto conversion - 67 VW Beetle mid engine conversion help please.

    Hi all,
I wonder if anyone could help me, I have a 1967 VW Beetle with a mid engined Subaru Impreza WRX 2.0 engine and 5 speed manual gearbox.
The problem is that the manual gear change is reversed (1st is 2nd and 2nd is 1st etc right through the box....)
I have made a linkage using rose joints to revert it back to the standard change but in all honesty is awful!
This linked with the very heavy stage 4 clutch as made me decide to do a full auto gearbox conversion.
I have found someone breaking a full WRX Auto locally and can get everything needed but wondered is it possible to convert the box so I can just change gear manually (2-3-D etc) as the full conversion could be a wiring nightmare!
If this is not possible could anyone tell me exactly what I will need?
    Autobox
    Torque converter
    Flywheel
    Gear selector
Gearbox ecu? - do I need this
Car ecu - do I need to swap my manual ecu for the Auto ecu?
    Anything else?
Thanks for reading and any help would be great.

    Steve

Wow, welcome.. Sounds like you need to rebuild that trans and replace the stage 4 clutch. That is a lot of clutch for the 5 speed trans to handle

When all those stancetards try to defend themselves by saying "but I'm being different, bro! You're a sheep!"

I'mma just link them a pic to your car and say, "That is different and creative. You're a sheep."

Holy crap. You win clubdub today.

Bear in mind most of us are US-based, so we didn't see WRXs until the GD-era. If I were to guess, that would be an EJ20G engine, correct? What era automatic transmission would you be installing?

There are a number of things on this car that, by all rights, I should really hate. But I don't. The net of what you have there is just staggeringly awesome. Nicely done. I'd love to drive that car around.

Have you looked at shift linkages for sand rails with mid-engine setups? They're really set up for VW tranaxles, but might be tweaked to do what you need. Look on this page, and search for the word "mid", which should take you about halfway down to a linkage setup.

I made a reverse gear linkage using rose joints and it was really smooth, however the gear linkage cables and change are really stiff so the rose jointed linkage was also stiff.
Just need to get the auto conversion fitted now....
    Any advise guys?

LOL, sorry, I totally skipped over the the whole "convert to auto" thing.
Seems like it would be a lot easier just to make the manual linkage work better. Your car, of course! How much does that thing weigh, without a driver?
