Front and rear shifter bushings

What exactly are they used for individually. I know that they're used for cleaner and crisper smoother shifting, but what does the front bushing do compared to the rear. What's their individual purpose?

They reduce forward/backward slop. In order to install one, you are basically there for the other. If you have to choose just one to install, go with the rear, but you may as well install both or not bother...

Thanks man,I'm definetely going to get both done at the same time...just didn't know exactly what they're for. Had a feeling it was something like that.
