To me it sounds more central than front right where the heat shield is, but the car in general is loud so it makes it hard to pinpoint things.

The drive train in the wrx is super loud. I don't know if it's the cut of our gears or what but I get a pretty loud tranny whine when coasting. That said, it's more of a 'race car' tranny whine doesn't sound like anything is grinding.

I hear the whine in my car under acceleration but I get the same grinding noise other people are describing under deceleration and the two sounds don't seem to be related in my opinion. The Subaru dealership here told me a $1500 clutch replacement would probably fix the issue?!?!
