Shifter bushings are installed from underneath the car, so it doesn't really matter what shape the interior is in. You could remove the whole linkage, I suppose, but raising the front up on jack stands gave me all the clearance I needed, you just need to remove a couple crossmembers. Total time was under two hours, and it was first time ever working on my car, so heavy noob factor at play there.

I have the same whine but It's only noticable slightly in 1st, and very noticable in 2nd, then it gos away 3rd-5th. Sounds like the whine from a supercharger like somone else said. Is this normal?

I was about to add shifter bushings along with the STI Group N Transmission Mount, the TIC Shift Linkage Bushings and the TIC Wide Shift Lever Pivot Bushings on a 2010 WRX and I'm apprehensive about how the increased NVH might be.
I did notice thought that KartBoy and Cobb both use 95A durometer polyurethane whereas Perrin's are 88A which I believe means they're softer and I'm guessing less NVH? Has anyone experienced both sets?

And about the linkage and pivot bushings, will they add to the NVH as well?
