    Manual Transmission Help! 04 WRX

Hey guys. I have an '04 WRX 5 speed with 128k on it. I was driving home and made a stop at Wal-Mart when I couldn't downshift into 1st from 2nd. The shifter would move halfway to first (neutral) but wouldn't go anywhere else. I'm stuck using 2nd or neutral. Anyone else have this problem or know what it is? I wasn't driving it hard at all when this happened. Like I said, I was slowing down! I'm thinking there must be something wrong with the shift rail... but I don't know. Any suggestions will be appreciated!

Check the front shifter bushing. Mine popped off one and bound up... caused a similar problem.

    Or..... you blew 1st.

I can't select anything but 2nd. The shifter is very limited. Imagine your car is in 2nd gear and the only movement you can do from there is move it up just far enough to disengage second. No other gear is accessible.

OK I'd check the shifter as mentioned; otherwise I'd have the car flat bedded to a mechanic.

The shifter was the first thing I checked and everything looks fine... nothing out of place. I checked the bushing in the cab as well as everything going into the tranny. I'm thinking it must be internal. It just blows my mind that something like that would happen when I'm driving it easy.

Unfortunetly you don't have to drive hard yourself if the previous owner abused it.

Sorry about that, now is the time to decide what's next. Have it flatbedded to a transmission shop.

Well, if it has to be rebuilt/replaced now sure would be a good time for an STi 6 speed! ;-) Anyone see a money tree around? haha...

You could have it rebuilt with stronger gears for less than a 6 speed. If you find that money tree let me know, I think my tranny is headed in the same direction.

So does anyone know if there is a difference between the 03 and 04 5 speeds? I found an 03 that probably has the parts I need and just want to know the compatibility. Also, does anyone know how to beef up the stock 5 speed in case I need a rebuild? Thanks!
