    what size tire

09 wrx. lowered on rce yellows.

    new wheels are 18x8.5 et38

    tirerack said 225/40.

    i was thinking 235/40.

don't want to over stretch the tire, but don't want to have to roll fenders either.

    What size would be best?

Tire Rack is experienced. Ask them again, on the phone, indicating your intended usage and concerns.

wouldn't the 245 be too big?

and the 35 give me a smaller diameter compared to stock, thus throwing the spedometer off?

No. You have a stock 17 inch wheel. I am pretty sure an 18 with a 35 sidewall will get you fairly close to stock diameter. And a 245 would not be too wide on an 8.5in wheel. I run 245's on my stock 18's, which are 8.5 in wide. Any lower than 245 and you'd have stretch.
