Wheel offset question

I have a 13 WRX seden. I know the stock offset is 53, if I went with a 55, would it make the wheels stick out further? Or more narrow? I'm kinda confused on how the offset thing works. I know it's a noob question. I'm looking into winter wheel setup.

welcome. the lower the number the more it will stick out.

ie: 43 would stick out more than 53.
