Bought a 1997 impreza Sti few month back, bout a week after buying it when i was pushing hard in 3rd or 4th i was getting the odd kickback at 5000rpm, it would kick back once then go through 5000rpm fine to the red, it was occuring mainly during cold weather but im not sure if this was the reason. This first happened on a trackday at Oulton park, then occasionally on road use and then only bout 3 times at Silverstone which was good. Today ive gone to Oulton park again and it was constant all day but today doing it at 4000 5000 6000rpm mainly in 4th gear. I have been to see a specialist and he just said change exhaust and decat the car, then add daughter board and remap (£1300) surely there is a cheaper way to solve this problem?? im happy with the power would rather get this solved cheap and spend money on coilovers and slicks.

Sounds to me like overboosting causing fuel cut. Very well could need a tune, which is what it sounds like you are talking about.

What mods are on the car currently? Keep in mind majority of our users are in the US and we never had access to GC generation turbo Subarus. We didn't get them until the 2002 model, and STIs until 2004.
