My original point was that the case of a 16-year-old that's been given a new STI by his parents isn't germane to a conversation about who can afford the car. I'll let you guys sort out the stuff about 40-year-olds living with their parents, etc...except to say that I couldn't have done it. For a variety of reasons that I won't get into, I was quite ready to exit at age 18.

Thanks for making my point for me.

The STI is a fine car, but so many of the owners have major ego issues and this thread demonstrates that once again. Even SUGGEST that it's not worth the money and we get the standard lecture about how superior it is and how you can't touch it for the coin if you were to modify a regular WRX instead, despite the fact that a stock STi is still a 13 second car and simply doesn't cut it as-is and so you have to upgrade and/or replace a lot of components anyway, so why pay $9k more to start when you can use that towards actual gear that belong in real racing if racing is your bag?

Simply taking it to the track and racing other stock owners is a hobby, not a sport, IMO. For all the hot talk about it, stage 2 is still just an ECU reprogram with a slightly larger pipe attached to the exhaust. That's not going to get you under 10 seconds by a long shot nor is a helical cut gear box going to cut it in competitive racing (shifts are time).

What it comes down to is the STi is a WRX with a slightly larger intercooler, 6-speed gear box, tighter suspension and controlled differential (and oh yeah, you can turn off hill-assist). The suspension is going to need to be upgraded for many types of racing. The 6-speed is going to need a dog box make-over. The car is going to need a much larger turbo and associated upgrades to hope to make enough power to compete with larger aspirated engines and in the end it's still a RALLY racer, not a stock car. All the bragging in the world won't change any of that and so I say the STi is still just a track wannabe hobby machine.

STi owners love to talk about how close their machine is to some overpriced Corvette or whatever, but when someone talks about how their car is overpriced compared to the base WRX, especially given slightly slower 0-60 times, they get mad and start defending the ever-living-hell out of their buying decision. That's called being able to dish it out, but not take it.

If it's worth it to you, you shouldn't have to defend your decision. But the days of bragging how much faster the stock STi is over the stock WRX seem to be over (awaiting next-gen WRX, at least). Subaru could have made the STi faster over the past few years, but clearly there's a potential longevity issue once you go too much above 300HP on a 4-banger that they didn't want to address (at least without having to raise the price considerably). Meanwhile, they had to address the power on the regular WRX because competitors like the Mazda Speed 3 were catching up to that power for less rather quickly. This is why they are abandoning the 4-door model for 2013. They've reached the limits of the pumped up daily driver. They're now looking at RWD options, 2-doors and a sports car profile and weight reduction all while trying to squeeze more fuel economy out of mandates that don't much like 20mpg gas guzzlers.

Yeah seriously if I didn't enjoy riling up the masses I wouldn't bother replying, but all those WRX owners are so jealous of us STI guys and wish they had one and get angry so easily I just can't resist.
I could have afforded an STi. I chose the WRX because a daily driver is all I need. $9k more for the same interior options buys the makings of a nice home theater. We all have our priorities.

I'm very stupid, very angry, and hate all WRX owners just because I drive an STI.
Pissing contests aren't based on hate. They're based on ego and arrogance. STi owners LOVE WRX owners because they think they get to look down on them. (e.g. Nice training wheels car. When are you going to get an STi? Ha ha ha )

Mr MagnumXL you need to get a sense of humor and learn what sarcasm is.....

Sounds like somebody is compensating for a small penis with his username and attitude. J/K

Some are being humorous; some are not. My first entire paragraph in my original post was meant to be humorous, but that doesn't change my opinion about the reasons many go out of their way to get an STi. But it's no different than a Cobra owner lording it over a GT owner lording it over a 6-cylinder owner, etc., except that the power difference that used to be a real factor has all but vanished in recent years, which has largely taken away my own "penus envy", so-to-speak.

I wouldn't have minded an STi and I could afford one (just a matter of prioritization and/or a small loan; I paid cash for my WRX as it was above the trade-in of the old one), but I couldn't justify the extra cost to myself for my uses. Besides, when you get closer to the $40k range, there's some other cars I might consider, used or otherwise.

BTW, the user name comes from the Roller Coaster of the same name at Cedar Point in Sandusky, OH, not the condom (used to be a huge roller coaster enthusiast and traveled all over to ride various coasters, but the Magnum kept me coming back to Cedar Point). As for penus size, MagnumXL is what I happen to buy, though as well (only average length, but larger than average girth, if you must know).
