I've surfed Indian Beach in my kayak. It seems like a pretty friendly place to learn. I don't go out there very often though. Generally I surf river waves. They usually aren't as big, but they are consistent and your ride lasts as long as you want (or until you screw up and get flushed).

Indian Beach is cool, I go to Short Sands. I went to Costa Rica for spring break and there was a ton of people kayaking on the waves, it was crazy. I tried to get into kayaking but didn't know anyone who did it so I was over it.

Let me know if you do want to get into paddling. We have some great resources for learning and getting started here in PDX, not to mention that this area is just made for this sport.
If not, that's cool. It's not for everyone.
Actually, I am heading out the door to the upper Clackamas for an after work paddle right now. It's just about all I can think about on these hot days.
