Hey all,

Didn't know what was going on, I don't get email reminders anymore for this thread! What's going on?

My new wheels/tires should be in on Thursday. I won't be going to KilKare, I'll be installing them and probably getting an alignment done the same day.

About the White WRX guy, He was cool, definately a respectful guy who wanted to listen to me tell him all about the AccessPORT. I am pretty sure he's gonna buy it soon and flash himself up to Stage2. (I'm not sure he knows what stage it was, but since most of you say Stage1, that's cool)

That means I should be running mid 13's with the Stage2/93 setup! I'll be practicing my launch here and will be out at the track in the next few weeks for sure!

PS - "SMOKE U" DOES have nice sweats by the way. My GF noticed.

I tried to tell the white WRX dude that he may save some money if he tells Cobb he already has a reflash, but I was interupted by Mr. 14.3. Unless someone knows otherwise, it would be good to save him some money.

I told him that the upgrade was $160. I talked to him just before his last run of the night, so no fears, he has the whole scoop down. I'm pretty sure we'll see him running Stage 2 here in the near future!

Looks like it might be a good day Thursday... I am thinking I might run for the first time. Any tips would be appreciated
I would like to get a run in before Access Port gets here. Also have the laptop hooked up.... Anyone else up for going?

My Tips (for whatever they may be worth):

Practice spinning all 4 wheels from the launch. Yes, this is the proper "tranny saving" technique to get a good launch. You actually might want to inflate your stocker tires to like 40 PSI or so to "enhance" the wheelspin.

"Wheelspin is what you WANT while drag racing?" you ask.

Yes. To save your tranny/clutch from destruction, you want your wheels to spin off the launch. Only for an instant. Believe me, you couldn't keep them spinning if you wanted. The car will lurch forward with immense speed and dexterity after an initial "spin".

This "spin" serves (2) purposes:
1. Saves your tranny.
2. Keeps your engine "under load" which in turn allows you to build boost pressure off the launch.

Your WRX/STI will ONLY build boost pressure "under load", so keeping the engine under load by spinning the wheels is your best bet to low E/T's!

A good way to practice this is to launch from a stoplight on a road that is still a bit wet. You'll get faster "wheel spin" and learn how to launch your car a bit better without hurting your tranny a bit.


I guess you have to take this all with a grain of salt. I'm the guy with the WRX who didn't even manage less than a 2.0 60ft time, but I also had only made 3 runs in my entire life. For whatever that's worth, I think I mentally "know" how to drag, I just haven't had enough experience with it.

ALSO: Don't worry about your R/T. That has nothing to do with your 1/4 mile times. It's solely used in the drag "competitions" and in "qualifying". Although, if you are lined up next to some guy that you want to "physically" beat to the line, your R/T will then become important. If you are racing solely for "slips", you won't care.

dave - sorry I didn't make it out, I had a nasty case of food poisoning from something I ate on saturday afternoon.

edit: kevin, as far as launching - some people say keep the rpm's at about 4500 or so and keep the clutch depressed until it's about to grab. that is the technique I would use, but if yer not used to it, then pulsing the rpm's between 4000 and 5000 might work better, as it leaves more room for error, imo. just make sure when you let the clutch out, you don't just rip your foot away from it. try to act like you stepped on some gum, and you're trying to pull your foot off the clutch at that speed. normally works well.

From most of the threads on imprezawrxsti.com they've been setting the DCCD to manual full back or the one click before. Based on on a few runs one guy did he thought the position before full back worked the best so that's what I've been using. I've left it there for all my runs.
Be careful because it resets to auto everytime the car is turned off. So once I forgot during one run and noticed a considerable difference when it was left in auto. Just remember when you're on deck and spraying the IC, check that the DCCD is in manual and back.
In term of launching, practice a few before you get up there, for sure. You'll definately be babying it at first and it'll take a few confidence boosters to get it up to 5000 for lauch. Then do Eric's sticky gum method.
Don't forget 2nd is real quick right after. Put your shift light at 5700 cause you'll be wanting to take it to red line and that wouldn't be good time for a fuel cut. The earlier the light and beep goes off the better for your shift.
Because of the gear ratios you'll have to go to 5th for the last few yards.

Looking forward to any notes you get from your runs. With this weather get there early as possible. Like 4:30 if you can.

Bad news is that I'll be out of town starting wed so I'll miss it on thurs. I'll definately be out next thursday. Maybe we could go STi vs. Sti one time. That hee-hah announcer wouldn't know what to do then.

Did anyone notice that the WR1 gets 320hp off 2 liters. This may be a typo. I even checked the units.

someone mentioned that if you already had a reflash, Cobb would sell you the AP for cheaper. Now I don't have a previous reflash, but is there a way to get an AP for cheaper? Do you have to show a receipt to get the cheaper price or something.

I think Cobb has your name on record if you had a previous reflash. I know if you buy a used reflashed ecu, you have to pay Cobb 20 or 30 bucks to switch it over into your name. So I doubt there is a way around it.

Hey guys... sorry to cut in on the conversation, but I figured that I would introduce myself, since i live in the same area and all.
My name is Adam, I live in Centerville, I have a 2002 blue WRX. I only bought it about a month ago, after totalling my Civic hatch. I have owned 7 Hondas/Acuras over the years, and built up nearly all of them. I really enjoy doing engine work, but I figure that since i did so much engine work on Hondas out of necessity, it would be nice to get into something different. So now I'm looking to learn as much as possible about these Subarus, so I can start getting mine to where it needs to be. Anyway, thats about it...just thought I would say hi. I hope that there is a meet sometime soon... I see so many other WRX's on the road around here, i figure that some of them must be yours. I look forward to meeting up with you guys as the summer progresses.
