The fourth generation 2012 Subaru Impreza has arrived, and to paraphrase Huey Lewis, the first thing you might notice is that it's hip to be square... er. Underneath its skin, the new Impreza says a few things that Americans aren't so used to – nor so fond of – hearing, like the fact that it has a smaller-displacement engine with less horsepower.

If that's the step backward, though, there are more than two steps forward: It's lighter, faster, more frugal, stiffer, nicer inside, has a better suspension and more interior room, all the while being the same size as the previous generation. Said Subaru Production Line Manager James Todd, "it's all upside."

We'll let you decide that. But in the meantime...

Both the wagon and the sedan are very oddly proportioned. The body lines of the sedan remind me of a Camry and the wagon reminds me of a Pontiac vibe. I guess the new Subaru demographic is drawn to these kinda cars... not me. :(

Meh. The high door sill / shorter glass "chopped" look reduces outward visibility. It's currently in fashion for many cars. I've admired Subaru in the past for not being a follower.

It is very Caliber-ish as pointed out above. :(

Its been done. Why do you think ford was regularly kicking subaru's ass in wrc? .. the only place subarus are constantly top fishers is here in the states. Round the rest of the world they have some seriously stiff competition from the other makes.

I am not sure what to think. Like some posters have said, I need to see it as a WRX or STI to make my mind up. I remember when the 2006 came out and people hated the headlights, I remember 2008 and the cry was that Subaru had sold its soul. I think that it will just take time for people to get used to this body style.

I cant imagine the STI and WRX looking that much different than whats on the road now. I mean they just released that body style within the past two years. Plus, the STI hatch was created in order for subaru to stay competitive in WRC. I doubt the hatch is going away, nevermind getting a radical facelift.

We can get the focus RS .. but its got volvo c30 badging all over it and its a bit on the ugly side. I agree though I agree, the focus crowd would definitely convert quick.. I'm sure there would be others too.

The BEst and Most loved look of all the Subaru's is the 4 door 01 Impreza, everything sorta went down hill from that especially the toyota camry look alike wrx 08-10.

Subaru still races in the rally scene, they just do IRC instead of WRC.

Toyota (to my understanding) stepped away from the racing scene because they sold more camry, corolla, priuses (plural equivalent?) than Supras, Celicas and...dont know what other sports car they have.

Plus, the Toyobaru...joint project...doesnt look boxy at all. But all in all, yes, Toyota has "sold out".

the body style will grow on you just like the other ones...

I dont like the fact that Subaru drop out the racing seen.
Honda did the same thing.

Racing of there cars shows the customers how well the cars can take a beating

That is why Ford races every dam car they ever made just like the new Festiva

I just hate that we cant drive a AWD Festiva Its not like want to but Its like going to a strip bar you can look but I cant touch that's why I dont go...
