How to upload avatar?

I searched but found nothing.
How do I make a photo small enough to be uploadable to use as an avatar?
I resized my photo but it somehow converted it into a btmp instead of a jpeg. Now it won't upload even though it's small enough.

if you did try that and it didn't work just host it on some other site and use that URL

to make it a jpeg just open it in MS paint and save as and select JPEG
