    Thanx for the tips

Hey thanks everyone for the tips. I actually had all of that in mind as I was driving. The main thing was downshifting to seccond as usual, than slowing with breaks to aprox. 15 km, than smoothly applying pressure until it pops into gear.

My house is located at the bottom of a steep hill, with a stop sign about 100 feet from the base of the hill. It gives me enough time to accelerate into 2nd, but than I have to shift back to 1st to avoid lugging the engine. Now I just appoach the hill slowly and let it pull at 3000rpm.

for that I would just recommend leaving it in 1st the whole time.

welcome to the wonderful world of subaru's!

thats how these cars are. brand new 03 with 7 miles didnt want to go into 1st or Reverse even at a complete stop... eventually it got easier to shift into 1st or R... and now 2 years later its a little better, but yes I have problems getting into 1st or reverse from time to time.

Here's some tips to coax it in:
    - double clutch
    - put it into another gear (2nd, 3rd, or 4th... experiment and see what works for you) then into 1st or R
    - give it a rev when trying to slip it in

    Good luck!
Yes, that is me in my avatar! Kid's don't try this at home.

Thats normal. There is no synchro on reverse.

There were various replacment part updates around the time, I think late for 03 models.

Every one of us 02 owners had the hard to shift into 1st gear problem.

Do not use synth in the tranny, stick with dino. I'd drain and refill just to see if that helps.
