    Looking to buy...what year?

Hey all, new to the forum and am looking to pickup a WRX or STI in the near future.

I don't know a great deal about them, and am trying to learn the differences between model years.

I wanted to ask everyone if there were any BIG improvements a certain year that would cause you not to buy anything older. I'm looking to get at least an 02, and probably no newer than an 05...but who knows.

    Thanks.

'02 was the first year of WRX's sold in America, and '04 was the first year for STi's in America. This opinion may be biased, but I say go with a bugeye ('02-'03) because they look the best. In such a case, look for an '03. The '02s had weaker gears, which was fixed somewhat in '03.

'03 SRP WRX sedan. Engine mods - SPT intake, Perrin sport tone catback, stage 1 tune. Suspension mods - lots, excluding only the springs, struts, and tophats. Plans - dont screw this one up.

Your budget will have a huge effect on this.

The 2002 WRX is known for having a fragile transmission. They strengthened it somewhat in 2003. 2004 got the first appearance "freshening" to the "blobeye" look. 2005 got an updated interior. 2006 got the second "freshening" to the "hawkeye" look, and also got the motor bumped up to a 2.5L block.

I prefer the appearance of the 02-03 bugeyes, so I voted for that body style w/ the stronger transmission(2003).

    w00t!

    2005 WRX or WRX/STi.

OR VF43 powered 07 WRX/STi. Too much $$$? Go for the 05 then.

'06 has a beast of a motor. Otherwise, I'd look at a high-mileage '02 or '03 with a nice history in order to save some money.

ok to be honest, if I were you I would look into getting an 03 1. because the tranny is a bit stonger then the 02... 2. they are the top of the line for the impreza model those years so they come loaded.

All over the spectrum as far as price, if you can get a new/used 2006+ you can probably get a higher mileage STi for a good price and get a solid tranny.
