Well, I'll be getting the WRX around this time next year, so I have to factor in depreciation, and I'll be trading the truck for the the car... adding in a couple summer jobs and being extremely frugal for the next year I think I'll be looking at around $19,000 to $21,000 (based on Kelly Blue Book private party value) before trade-in. It all depends on how much I can save this summer and how much I have to pay for tuition next semester...

Thats cause they where not released in the U.S.
I didn't realise that, I just based that assumption off of some of the quotes I had seen from the 2005. Thanks though.

If you are buying in a year, with that budget, you'll be able to pick up an 04 or even an 05. A lot will depend on how well the new 08 is received by the public. If they aren't well received, the resale on the used STis will stay level as to where it is now.

I personally think the 04 has the stronger diffs, but the 05 and up drive better and are easier to handle. On a comparison basis, the 04 is more brutish, and the ride gets more compliant as you advance in year models, but even the 07 STis are far more stiff than a stock WRX.

Sounds like you have a good plan in hand...now just to execute it.

As stated here and countless other places elsewhere if you want an STi, get one from the start.
why would you want to get an STi from the start and not move from a WRX to an STi?

The thread isn't about "moving" from a WRX to an STi, it is about modifying a WRX to meet an STi. The thread has now migrated into budget/timeframes so I can see how that question might come up.

The main reason if buying new would be depreciation...I lost a few *sigh* dollars when I went from a new 06 wrx to a new 07 STI.

If you are buying used it's kind of a mute point as you can probaly get most of your money back on either car as long as you dont run the miles up.

True, but in 3 to 4 years, the STi will retain a much higher resale value. No question.
