Woo Hoo... my car comes in tomorrow!

Hey all, just signed up for the site. Graduated college this May and got myself a nice little job. For the last year I've been drooling over the STi, and now I finally have a means to get it. As the first present to myself - a shiny new 2006 WRX STi. It comes in tomorrow! I'm psyched, to say the least. Negotiated a great deal, and went for the Blue with Silver rims.

Can anyone give me advice on the break-in period? I know the traditional approach, but I've also heard about different approaches using spurts of higher RPM ranges, producing a better seal on the piston rings. I'm skeptical to say the least, but what's the best break-in method for the STi?

No upgrades yet, obviously, but my next purchase is probably going to be a radar detector to avoid those pesky tickets. Looking at the Bel RX65 and the Escort 8500 X50. Opinions? I would like to go for the Bel RX75 as it's a concealed unit, but it doesn't do anything for POP radar.

Glad to be here, and look forward to meeting up with some of you and checking out your cars. I'll post pics once I take possession.

    -Justin

I have mine ordered as well. Iam sure your stoked. Break is oing depend up[on who you ask. I believe the manufacteIt's still aways out though. Maanufacturers have a reason for their reccomnedation. If you want it to last I belive use theie recommendation. But having said that, I have built may small/big block chevy's where I didn't care how long they lasted. Ran them hard after the intial 20 minute cam-ring seat 2500rpm break in. Change the oil and run them. Never a problem for me with them, but I knew their clearances, the machinist etc. They were machined a bit "loose" for performance reasons-8000rpm. I believe "factory" engines are tighter from the start so break in on them should be easier. Ask 100 people and get 100 different answers. I think I'll take it fairly easy, but will also run it out some, but not be stupid with it. I wouldn't trake a road trip doing the interstate drone at the same RPM though. I believe that ould be harmful way to break it in-vary the rpm's. It's been a while since I had a detector, but I don't like them. To little too late when they pull the trigger and don't run with them on. I have a CB and love it. Saved me WAY more tickets than any radar detector could-listen to the truck drivers and talk to them some. Besides they are a comedic lot. Enjoy your new ride.

Congrats man! The waiting must be killing you. It doesn't seem that either break in method has decreased the longevity of the engine, so just pick the method you feel more comfortable with.

Be sure to post pics when you get her!

Not in yet... going insane! I know that the 4th of July interrupted transit scheduling, so supposedly my car is on a boat on its way from the factory.

    ... must... drive... STi...

That was in response to my "what radar detector should I get?" question. I had narrowed it down to 2 choices: Bel RX65 and Escort 8500 X50. They're very close to the same (partially because they became one company not too long ago), but I think I'm leaning towards the Bel RX65.

I can afford the car, afford the insurance, but I'd prefer not to have to afford the tickets too (and the insurance hike that comes with them!). If you like to drive fast, which I bet you do, a good detection system will pay for itself in the tickets avoided. Cheap-o isn't the way to go with these, 'cause they just don't work, or work too late.

STi update: I love how Atlantic Subaru said it would be in on "Monday or Wednesday" of this week. Called the dealership again today (twice), and IT'S STILL NOT IN. Grrr. And the longer it takes to get in, the longer it takes for the insurance paperwork to clear, and the longer it takes for me to get in my car!

OK, so it took 8 more days from "tomorrow" for my STi to arrive, but about 5 hours ago, I finally took possession. The drive home was a thing of beauty. Staying under 4K is the toughest thing in the world, but give me 986 more miles, and it's WOT time.

Just when you thought your wait is finally over, I guess you still have to wait a little more (another 1,000 miles) for the WOT time

    Congrats again, and have fun!!
