    newer-used car

so im thinking about buying a 2002-05 WRX, is their any common problems with the impreza's. i was origionaly thinking about a 2003 GTI but VW has too many electrical problems w/ their cars, pluse the re-sale value on them sucks. hopeing to get a WRX with around 20K-30K miles on it.

I'm also looking for a used WRX. From what I've read on this board the only real problem is a somewhat weak tranny, but that seems to be a problem only if the car was driven really hard. I also saw something in passing about clutch shudder in the 02-03 but when I searched not much came up. I think it's a problem covered by the warranty. A guy with a 02 for sale that I talked to on the phone said his shudders on cold mornings a bit when the car isn't warmed up but it's no big deal.

I'm still deciding if I should buy a 04-05 with low miles and a high price or go for a 02-03 with more miles and a lower price. Right now I'm thinking I'll find a solid early car with a few dings and save some money. Most of them have under 60,000 which really isn't much at all if the car wasn't abused. I'm going to move in a few months and will probably not have a garage anymore, I'd be more comfortable parking a car on the street that already had a few chips and scrapes rather than worrying about a pristine $19,000 car losing it's bang cherry when some drunk sideswipes it at 3am. I think I can find a good running early car with 40,000-50,000 miles for about $14,000-15,000. That would do me right.

    Welcome to you both then.

The site has a car purchasing forum. There is a tremendous amount of info there.

Here is a link with some info, though the first poster is a bit suspect...
How to Buy a Used WRX or STI

Also check out the other sticky threads in the first forum. The more you read, the cheaper getting an Impreza will be (no joke!).

    Enjoy.

Yeah I have an 02 and it only shudders when I don't drive it for an extended peroid of time like more than 3 days of not being driven, and it only does it for the first few times when its cold, then it goes away. It's not a big deal it maybe happaned to me a handfull of times at most. I also have 62K on mine and no tranny problems to report. You have to use your common sense when you try to break traction with all 4 wheels by dumping the clutch from 5, 6K things are bound to break so this is where all this tranny braking came to place. Yes the tranny could have been better like its made for the STI but then there is the price difference you have to pay to get the STI tranny.... nothing in life is ever free you always have to sacrifice something for something.
