    Welcome! "Stage 1" is generally considered to be just a tune, or a tune with an intake. Check out the link in rage's sig and the link in mine for good reading on modding these cars.

    I heard from a friend that installing a shirt shifter on the new wrx's can cause gear grinding

    Transmission gears are in constant mesh... the shifter has NOTHING to do with gear engagement, and I fail to see how the fulcrum of the shifter would have any effect on synchro engagement either. Your friend sounds like he/she is grasping at straws in attempt to sound like he/she has some basic knowledge about cars.

    You'll be fine. Plenty of people on here have short shifters. Short shifter is even a factory option. Its ok to install if you want to.
