    STi-based Murtaya roadster checking in

My name is Mike and I wanted to check in with a Subaru-oid car:

We actually got a Murtaya up and running around the States (the first of only two in the US)! After seven years, this AWD, turbocharged roadster is on the road and a blast to drive.

I've got more information on a site I've been keeping track of the build: MyMurtaya.com: The site dedicated to the Subaru WRX/STi-based lightweight AWD roadster.

I found clubWRX while searching for horn installation information (can you guess what I'm currently working on?).

    Mike

Welcome to the forum! I confess I don't know much about the Murtaya, but seems like a very cool project!

Very cool. I love the kit cars; specifically the Factory Five variants.

Welcome to the forums! Awesome build! Did you build it just for fun or autocross/drag/etc?

Looks like a BRZ killer. Very nice. I browsed your website but could not find the specs. Is this a direct WRX swap?

I believe you can use various different impreza platforms.

If you can live with the quirks of a kit car, then in many ways they can be preferable to a production car...You can customize it exactly how you want it, you can relatively easily fix and modify things, they tend to be a bit lighter and more rare (especially in the states), etc. Heck, I was even able to get rid of the rattles in mine (unlike my WRX ) and the fit and finish is actually pretty good thanks to the guy who worked on the body and finish. Granted, there are rough edges and most likely will be, but those seem to be the same things that give your car character/soul and make it memorable.

Originally, I had just become a big Subaru fan with the 2002 WRX and 2004 STi, but would have just loved the powertrain in a sports car...When I saw the Murtaya, it was basically my ideal car (or at least as close as I could realistically get).

After all the time to get it finished, I'm currently just enjoying driving it around and turning heads. Eventually I plan on getting it to the various tracks (since you can't really use a lot of the performance on the road), but not right now because:
    • There are still a number of issues and fine-tuning that need to be worked out before going full-bore with her, including getting a custom built reverse lock-out cable for the shifter and a final tune

    • I want to get used to her...a bit too much car for my skills to handle right now

    • Once I start racing her, I'm most likely gonna start spending a lot money again...I need to recoup for a bit!

Yeah, the kit was made to work with all sorts of Subaru Impreza stuff (though originally the GCs were the target of the kit because of their high availability), including the 5-speed, 6-speed, and even 4eat transmissions coupled to WRX, STi, and even naturally aspirated flat-4s (and even though a naturally aspirated Murtaya should still be a great drive, usually by the time people put the effort into building one they figure they might as well go with a turbo). Supposedly there's even room for a flat-6, and I think I saw somebody even shoehorn a BMW V8 in at some point...

Really loving it. Would love to see some specs on it once you get the final tune.

Curious, what was the final build cost for this car? It is amazing looking and looks so fun to drive!
