STI 02 INVIDIA CATBACK ? first MOD!

I want more power and sound out of my STI - not a ridiculous amount, but more

My mechanic said invidia catback N1 is a good pipe to put in - but i don't like the N1 look (too much like a cannon) - so I asked to weld my current stock STI tip to the invidia instead and he said that is fine and should not reduce the power or sound from the invidia.

Is this true? and is this a good way to go for a bit more power and sound? I will be doing this on the 1/6/2013! First MOD!

a catback will give you sound but definitely not power. you MIGHT see 1-3HP gain on a good day (unless you get a stage 1 tune)

that's no good, would you recommend anything with more power? I don't care as long as its under 1300 and doesn't have a canon look.

gotcha! to see power, you want to get a downpipe & some sort of tune/engine management. you can either get just the downpipe and leave your catback stock or you can get a turboback exhaust (which is essentially a downpipe & catback together)

i myself have an invidia n1 turboback and it honestly isnt as obnoxious as you may think:

    yes i am! lol

here is a good diagram which will show you what a downpipe is [the pipe coming off the turbo]

as to whether or not you need a tune, i'm not sure since i'm not familiar with AUS models. here in the USA any 04+ wrx & sti both require tuning any time you get an aftermarket downpipe. 02-03 wrx's could run an aftermarket downpipe WITHOUT a tune. we dont have 02 sti's here though so i'm really not sure. i would probably lean towards not needing a tune, but i would still get one to be safe. it'll run better anyway and get the most power out of the modifications.

Yup. You already have one but an aftermarket one is where your power will come from.

I'm not sure where you can go in AUS for tuning. Maybe try finding a local subie club/forum

Flash Tuning (Forester XT) - YouTube

Its kind of a strange link but it shows swapping an exhaust and a couple different tuning companies in Australia. Not knowing anything about Australia its as much of a help as i can be.
    Find a low-mileage one-owner unmodified '04/'05 and you're golden.
