A salesman will tell you whatever he thinks you want to hear to make a sale. The way that the warranty generally works is that a warranty claim is denied if the failure was a result of the modification. In other words, if you crack a ringland and you have a downpipe, catback and ECU reflash... you can count on the warranty claim being denied. You MIGHT get lucky if you out the car back to 100% stock before taking it in for repairs and the dealership is willing to lie for you, but SOA often sends a rep to inspect a car if the claim is an expensive one such as an engine replacement and they will check to see if the car has been modified (also checking for signs of mods that were reverted back to stock). A co-worker recently went through this exact scenario with his 2011 Sti. He was running stage 2 mods and cracked the #4 piston. The dealer told him they were ok with mods when he purchased the car, but SOA got involved when his engine blew and refused to cover the repairs (even though he had returned the car to stock prior to the SOA rep inspecting the car). In the end, you are rolling the dice with your warranty if you mod your car and it is fraud to try and cover your tracks in the event of a warranty claim and SOA will likely be able to tell anyway.

    To the OP -

You mentioned you traded in your 08... did your 08 previously have mods on it and you restored them back to original with stock tune before trade in? I am curious as to how a modded car makes it back to trade in... it would be rare for a dealer to take a modded car?

1st congrats on an awsome car! I just got the same car last week but in DGM! Hatch WRX's rock!! 2nd I would be careful and still double check with your dealers service department on those MOD's and what would and wouldnt be covered under warranty god for bid something dose break! Dont ever listen to a salesman he's just trying to sell you the car LOL... Sometimes those guys will tell you whatever you want to hear just to make the sale! And half the time they dont even know what they are talking about. When i buy a new car or motorcycle i always test there knowledge and 90% of the time i know more then they do! And thats just from doing research most of the time!,,LOL Anyway from my understandings of warranties you are almost right in what you are saying that a part can only void that part! But that usually means if you part aftermarket exhaust on the car and the radio breaks it wasn't because of the exhaust!!! But if you throw on MOD's like exhaust, down pipe ,bigger turbo, CAI and Tune and something goes wrong with your engine or Tranny well they will link it to those parts! I know the advise came from a different salesman after the purchase but there all part of the same place and want to get you excited and maybe want things to go wrong to make more money in parts! you never know! im not trying to sound -negative but just saying be careful..
