Nope. NORMAL. Subaru didn't add a syncro to reverse.
Either double clutch or do the Subaru Dance(into first/second then reverse)

    This is 100% accurate.

One time I did the "Subaru dance" for like 5 minutes straight. I was getting so pissed. I had to get out of the car and get back in again lol

Damn, 5 minutes... that's just insane! You have MUCH more patience than I.

Double-clutch: just as if you are double-clutching.
    Press clutch in.
    Shift to natural
    Release clutch
    Press clutch in
    Into reverse

That usually solves it for me. Rarely I'll have to blimp the throttle after putting it in natural and releasing the the clutch, rarely... but it happens.

Just a quick word to the wise: If you're having trouble getting into reverse, put the car in first, and let the clutch out ever so barely so the car moves maybe half an inch, it will nearly always go straight into reverse after that.

    Good advise.
I'm glad to hear that the Reverse Dance is still alive and well in the line of WRX's. Gotta have some tradition in there.

Double clutching is usually enough to get into reverse for me, but sometimes that transmission just doesn't want to behave, particularly if the car has been sitting in the cold for a long time.

I'm new to Subaru's but had this same problem with some Saginaw's and Muncie transmission but they both have a non syncronized reverse.. I usually put it in 4th let the clutch out a little just to barely move the car (as said above) thats to get the cluster gear in your trans to line up better with you reverse gearing. It should slide right into place after that.

You will at some point, trust me. It doesn't always happen, but you drive a Subaru, so it's bound to happen eventually.
