If your other tires are all brand new, yes.. but once they get some wear on them no. As you drive the tread wears down, decreasing the overall diameter of the tire, if you have three worn tires and one brand new one the tread depth won't be the same.

You just need to listen to guys that have knowledge in AWD cars. No you cant just replace one tire like the other guys have said. If you really want some warranty or something to that affect, ask you insurance company because some of them have warranty programs that are cheaper and much better coverage. So dont let the dealer sell it to you, also you are going to be paying interest on that stuff if you buy it and add it to the loan... Not the best decision

Go it. This now makes perfect sense to me. Thanks all for the advice!

Like the others have mentioned, I wouldn't bother with any of them, with the exception of the extended warranty. If you don't plan to modify the vehicle, it may be worth it, it may not (I only had one minor claim during mine, which ended up being paid for out of pocket, as it was below the $100 deductible). If down the road you choose to modify the car (thus, making claim approval more difficult), you can sell the warranty back for a prorated amount.

I don't buy expensive tires anymore because unless they're brand new, if something happens to one you need to replace all four, otherwise you will be replacing differentials later on due to differences in wheel speed caused by unequal tire diameter. (I had to replace the center diff on my first WRX partially because I didn't rotate the tires often enough.)
Did the screw occur after the EOL for the RE01s? If not, you couldn't bought one and had it shaved, "saving" a bit of money; it sucks to pay for a new tire and then take life away, but if money was tight at the time, you could've put off the inevitable purchase of four new ones. Were you able to sell any of the remaining three good tires to recoup?

I had thought about buying another one and getting it shaved, but without being heat cycled it would then wear faster than the others.. probably not to the point that it would be a huge problem. But, as you guessed, I'm fairly certain RE01s were no longer being sold at that point.

I haven't sold the remaining tires yet, they're sitting in my garage. I did notice a couple months ago that one of the "good" ones was damaged by NTB when I had them dismounted. I need to find a local RWD guy and unload them.
