New To the Forum....Looking At Buying an STI. Any Reliability Issues?

Bought a BRZ last week only to have the dealer in CA back out on the trade for the one at my local AZ dealer b/c someone came in and paid $7K over MSRP in CA and bought it out from under us (long story).

Anyway, found out the BRZ is having some first year problems with the VVT system in the 2.0 boxer engine (and we feel like we possibly dodged a bullet by having the dealer back out).....so we are thinking of going with the 2013 STI (Sedan) instead.

BTW, this will be my wife's DD. She fell in love with the looks of the BRZ but I was pushing for the power and AWD and 4 doors on the STI since we may move to the mountains in Colorado eventually.....that, and I'm a HUGE offroading fan and once the STI is paid for (maybe before) I'd LOVE to rally it.

Only question I have is: How reliable is the STI? Assuming I don't do anything more than possibly add a down pipe and exhaust and have the computer reflashed....will this thing be relatively trouble free? I won't be driving it like I stole it until it's paid off (4-5 years) and I just want to make sure I'm not buying another lemon (bought an IS 250 that we both loved, but it was a steaming pile of crap). I've heard some mention of the STIs burning oil? How much oil are we talking? Is it enough to foul plugs, burn up sensors after coating them in oil and wear out cats, etc.?

Are there any common failure points? I plan to look around the forum to see if there are any weak points in the car, but figured I'd ask here first. I don't want to run into an issue like we did with the first year production of the BRZ.

I may just leave the car completely stock....though after driving the regular WRX we noticed it has a much more pronounced turbo and wastegate sound than the STI. The wife is VERY disappointed that the STI is quieter than the WRX.....which is why I was thinking of adding the downpipe and exhaust (not so much for the extra power).

Also, what kind of mileage are you guys getting? My wife drives a lot of miles to work....but it's mostly freeway. Is the 23 mpg pretty accurate? My friend with a built up WRX (2008, I think) says he gets around 25 or so. Just wondering what to expect in terms of mileage.

Thanks for any help you can give.

    Sean

Is there a "problems" sub forum on the site? I'm not seeing one, but figured I'd ask.

Buying new, I'd say you don't have to worry about a thing. There isn't anything overly new about the 2013 STI's from previous years, and to my knowledge things have been going well with the newest generation. It'll take care of you as well as you take care of it. Maintain is properly, stick to the maintenance guidelines, use quality parts and fluids and I don't see any reason for it to be a problem at the very least until you expect to pay it off.

Remember that if you do add the turboback exhaust you need to have it tuned. No question about it, no skirting around it.

Understood. Will DEFINITELY have it tuned if we put a turbo back exhaust on.

Any word on the oil consumption? I've only found a few blurbs about it on line.

Thanks for the info. Very much appreciated.

Oil consumption on a turbocharged car is normal, though excessive consumption is of course not. I have not personally noticed any big complaints from people with excessive consumption, just the typical blowby amounts. That is unless they have a blown engine, but that's a different matter. Drive it harder, you'll typically consume more. I haven't seen more than half a qt of consumption in 5000 miles (my typical oil change interval unless racing) since I bought my '06 almost 110,000 miles ago.

Okay.....that's what I was thinking as well....even 1 quart per 4-5K miles wouldn't be an issue. I was more concerned it was like 1 quart every 1K miles or something.

Thanks again. I really appreciate the help.

Hey Sean. If you make it out to colorado... there are a few of us forum nuts out here.

The only year the sti had really reliability issues was in 2009. So, stay away from an 09 STi, and you should be fine.

On E85 I get around 25mpg hwy and 20 city. Add 10 to that for 91 oct. But, I am nowhere near stock.

Hey Sinister....thanks for the welcome. We're thinking of moving to the Bailey area....wife will be working in Englewood....so it'll be a long drive, but she doesn't have to do it everyday....but we really want to live IN the mountains on an acreage so I can build a shop, buy some CNC machines and hopefully open a side business.

No problem on the 09....we're looking for new (kinda leery of buying a performance car used.....never know what the last owner did to it).

Did I understand that right on the mileage? You're getting 35 hwy/30 city if you're using 91 octane?

    Thanks for the help.

Grew up going to bailey a lot to ride ATVs and shoot guns, and I work in englewood (actually sheridan.. but same difference).

I am getting 30 average on 91 with a max highway of 35... I can't really get a true city mileage because all of my driving is mixed highway/city. Something to note though... all of my emissions components (except the evap system) have been removed. I don't have TGVs, catalytic converters, the vacuum system, etc.

Gotcha. My buddy's WRX has most of that stuff removed as well (well, I am certain the cats are gone, not sure about the rest). Still, if we get 25 or better, we'll be pretty happy.

    Thanks for the info.

Fantastic....I'll have to check it out.

One unrelated question: Do you have to unsubscribe from a thread EVERY time you respond to it....or is there a way in the settings to NEVER subscribe to them? I don't want an email notification every time I post something.

BTW, I'm also really into shooting and quads.....sounds like Bailey's a good move for us and our hobbies.
