OK. How many miles and has it had the water pump/timing belt service?

Then you should be golden. I'd say replace that Uppipe has not already been done.

I recently went through an older WRX purchase myself, and at the time didn't know anything about cars either.

The best thing to do would be to reference the history against what Subaru recommends be done on the car. In general you want to make sure that the following maintenance items are current..

    1) The spark plugs have been replaced in the last 60k miles (depending on the type of plug. If done at a dealer they probably used platinum, and those last 60k miles)
    2) The oil has been changed in the last 3k miles (if conventional), or 5k miles (if synthetic)
    3) The engine air filter has been changed in the last 15k miles
    4) The transmission and rear diff fluids have been changed in the last ~15k miles.

If you are unsure on any of the above, your best bet is to get it done now. All can be done by yourself with a little patience and some google/youtube searches on how to get it done.

As for useful mods the general path on a 2004 will be..
    1) ECU tune (buy an accessport, get a tactrix cable, or have a shop tune it)
    2) Replace the uppipe/downpipe + a tune.
