    Opinions to calm the noob!

I posted when I first got my WRX (black hatch) about a month ago...

Bought it with 45 miles on it and am now near 1200. I have kept it generally under 4000 RPMs. Suspect I might have gone to 5000 1-2 times. However, there is no doubt I have driven it fast. For more experienced people with car knowledge (I don't even change my own oil) what are the chances I have damaged my engine? I keep telling myself people are harsher than I have been, but then feel bad about the imperfect break in. Let me be clear, I have had it going fast with rapid accelerations...just keeping the RPMs down all but one time when I probably hit 5000.

    Thanks for any opinions!

Part of what is feeding my paranoia is that the car seems to idle just a bit rough...or is that my imagination?!

Oh yeah...the time I went over 4000 I was not aware of the break in period (i.e. I read the manual AFTER I got it home!).

You're fine. You're being overly cautious. If you "blew" your motor...you would know. Its not a secret lol

I asked the dealer about a break in period, he said it didn't have one and I'd be fine, also that it can hurt the engine to be too easy on it. I drove the car pretty hard on the 250+ mile drive home (just a few pulls - not completely red lining or anything but over 5K), once I realized I should have been easy on the car for 1,000 I was pissed, but I have over 20K on the car with no issues. Obviously I should have done more research on breaking in the car, but the dealer was very sure that running it normally was the best thing for it. I wouldn't worry too much about your 5K RPM, I think these cars idle a little rough anyways, mine is much smoother after going stage 1 with TP

That's the worst part about the break in. Every day you get to ask yourself if you are doing it right and the answer is always "I don't know - I think so, but what if I'm not? Oh no, I think I'm ruining my car, I knew I should have bought used. This is why all my friends and family say I shouldn't own expensive things".

The truth is that you will be fine regardless.

thanks guys. I have been beating myself up over it! This is the first fast car I have ever owned (I was driving a Nissan Versa with 120 hp which was the trade in!) and just want to protect my investment...truly appreciate the feedback!

Now to start looking into making it even faster. Turns out I am sort of addicted to speed now

    New Car Break-in period

1000 miles: Drive calmly for the first 1,000 miles and vary your driving with a normal mix of city and highway.

    Avoid hard starts and stops.
Avoid over-revving the engine, try to keep RPMs under 4000.
Vary your speeds over the full range of city and highway driving
Don't use cruise control much, if at all.
City and freeway driving is fine because that will vary the speeds

No offense but you seem like the type who should have bought it just for the peace of mind! They actually are a really good deal on the WRX and STis if they give you a good price on it.... Not so much on the base impreza/ forester etc. The 7 yr 70k plan is only 1200 I think thats a pretty good deal considering how many people have broken expensive stuff inside that time if you drive hard. If you work on your own car then I guess you can get away with it but if you plan on using the dealer for repairs it might be a good idea. In training, we were told that Subaru actually pays out .80 of every dollar they collect on those plans.
