I would check for CEL codes first.. Do you have any way of data logging the car?

no no way to... i was told it may be the air flow sensor apparently subarus dont like the ones with oil in them (was told this after) because the oil gets on the sensor and buggers them. what do you think?

This is not untrue and it will not hurt to clean the sensor. To do so, treat it like delicate electronics, not a car part. Use electronics cleaner only and clean both the visible probe, which I think measures temperature, and the sensor that is located at the inner base of the stalk. Be very gentle and only use the correct cleaner.

Also clean your filter and when you re-oil it, use as little as possible. If there is residue on the inside of the tubing between the sensor and the intake, clean that too.

I'd suspect water somewhere (else?) though.
