    What he said ^^^^^^

And then are you planning to mod it, and if so, what's your budget and timeline for that? And is that budget included in the budget above, or is it in addition to that?

It's not a crap gearbox, but it won't last long if abused. Also, in 2003 (last year of the bugeye), Subaru changed to more robust gears.

Yeah, there are two separate gearboxes that shipped with the Bugeyes -- the -AA tranny shipped with the "crappy gears" while the -BA tranny received the upgraded gearset that is used in the 2003-2007 WRX.

However, it's not an exact science... some 2002 WRXs received the -BA tranny and some 2003 WRXs received the -AA tranny, so the only way to be sure is to check the platelet in the engine bay.

    Here's some more info:

Realistically, however, the gearbox longevity is very contingent on the way the car is driven. With an AWD vehicle, slamming every gear will leave you with a broken gearbox irregardless of the year/model.

"Irregardless" is not a word...you can just say "regardless".

According to Webster's, it is a word...

Irregardless originated in dialectal American speech in the early 20th century. Its fairly widespread use in speech called it to the attention of usage commentators as early as 1927. The most frequently repeated remark about it is that “there is no such word.” There is such a word, however. It is still used primarily in speech, although it can be found from time to time in edited prose. Its reputation has not risen over the years, and it is still a long way from general acceptance. Use regardless instead.

Sorry this is going to get off topic, I can tell. I don't particularly like the word, but it's a word. this has been discussed before
