just got my first wrx, any advice for modding an 01 jdm version?

hi guys, just got me an 01 wrx last week, completely stock and only one owner. apart from my transmission shaft seals cracking and nearly setting my car on fire i am in love with this car. im looking at running some simple mods for a small performance increase just to make it a bit more fun.
    any advice?

Congrats on your purchase! I would get a turboback exhaust, sri intake, fmic or bigger tmic, fuel pump and injectors, maybe turbo swap. Also a good engine management program to back up all the mods you do. Also suspension is a must.

I wouldn't recommend going from bone stock to doing turbo upgrades.

Op stick to the basics until you get used to the car

    1) make sure you Are up to date on all maintenance.
    2) get a cat less uppipe
    3) get a turbo back exhaust
    4) to get the most power a tune is recommended, but not required for O2-03 USDM models (assuming your 01 is a bug eye where you live?)

Let me be more specific. You do not need a tune for a tbe on a bugeye. Turbo upgrades, some intakes, etc still need to be tuned for

I always recommend a tune with a TBE even on a Bugeye... that being said, I've been digging around on the RomRaider forums, and it seems that the 2002-2003 USDM WRX stock maps are quite a bit different from the stock maps on 2004-2005 EJ205, so there may be some merit in that statement.

    EDIT:
I'm looking at the ECU maps from 2003 and 2004 USDM WRX (in RomRaider) and see little difference. How can the Bugeye, then, accept a TBE with no tune, but the 2004 WRX cannot...???

    From unabombers manifesto:

What Subarus NEED engine management? While every Subaru will benefit from engine management, the 04+ turbo models "require" it. The restrictions have to do with the open and closed loop fueling. To put the restrictions in a nutshell without being technical, there is a delay between open and closed loop fueling that can allow your 04+ Subaru to run lean during this crossover point in how your car gets fuel. Lean is dangerous as it produces detonation which is the #1 factor is blown pistons. In stock configuration, 04+ turbo models are fine, but modifications such as exhaust work or higher really necessitate the use of engine management as those mods cause the fueling issue to rear it's head. Yes, you can run certain mods for a short time until you get engine management, but you should never kid yourself on 04+ turbo models that bolt on modifications are fine without engine management.
